Traps to be added in a later patch - thoughts?

So Rocket mentioned a couple of hours ago on Twitter:

"Traps either this update or very shortly after."

This seems to be relating to a suggestion made by the writer of this article:

This is mostly because I'm a massive jerk, but I'd like to set traps. As a mostly solo survivor, I usually have to back away from people and observe them from afar. The solo player is vulnerable in all sorts of ways, and I'd appreciate being able to give myself a bit of help. What sort of traps? Improvised, Rambo-ish spikes in the woods; you could give up a shotgun shell to use in a small bomb. If there are teams of wandering bandits about, I want to deploy guerilla tactics on them."

Personally I think it sounds interesting, however I really don't want one more way to die randomly in the game, so there should be a way to balance their use, so that smart or well equipped players are able to avoid or detect them (maybe a metal detector added as equipment? IDK).

What are your thoughts on the potential future ability to set traps in DayZ?

traps seem like a great idea, just makes me feel like its going to be annoying running into random obscurely placed claymores, depends on the rarity.

As long as there is a possibility to see them (wire tripping, cut chunk of grass etc.) then I'm fine with it.

Leg-breaking traps? So players can pick up and place doors anywhere now?

On a serious note, I'd like bone breaker traps, pain traps, knockout traps, and bleeding traps (just a gash that bleeds, no damage except gradual from blood loss).

I like where you're going with this...what about a castration trap that turns your character into a woman?

I can see this being good and bad, but mostly bad.

Yeah traps are an awesome thing to have, nice for base defense, etc. We all get that.

But let's face it, it will mainly be used to trap a door so someone can DC and ghost out of the NW airfield.

I imagine the reverse is more likely, I for one will enjoy setting traps at deer stands, barracks, ATCs and Fire Stations for all those server hopping loot farmers out there.

You will never be able to trust a deer stand again, and Morphine will become super important.

The mechanics I'd like to have for bear traps is for the player to bleed slowly and get legs broken, but the trap can only be removed with the help of another player. Of course, the player can't be bandaged or move, not even crawl, until the trap is removed.

This will certainly enforce cooperation and lead to interesting situations and harsh decisions. Imagine a bandit who just killed a member of a party, run into a trap and now has to ask for his last victim's friends for help or bleed slowly to death. I'd get all his gear, then release him from the trap and tell him to run while shooting near his feet.

There's been some talk about IEDs, but before adding that complexity I'd like to have the ability to use grenades (frag and smoke) for booby-traps. If you can hold a grenade's lever under some weight and remove the pin, when someone pulls the weight it will go off. Hide it under a body or a heavy weapon, and when someone attempts to loot it, boom!

It's also another use for those empty cans. Put a grenade without the pin inside, with the can holding the lever in place, and when someone picks it up or moves over it there's a chance the grenade will fall and go off.

a tin can a grenade and some wire and you could make a trip wire trap, tin can over the gren, pull pin and set gren up so that the trip wire pulls the grenade out of the can when triped

Thank you, I have read your lengthy wikipedia article on 'Rape Culture' and am now suitably chastised.

Somewhat off topic though, wouldn't you say? We're talking about the ability to set traps in order to break fellow players legs in a game in which it is perfectly acceptable to murder innocent people for their cans of Baked Beans. Its not exactly Sunday School.

Are they going to despawn if a play isn't near them (keeping an eye on their trap) so that We don't randomly run into hundreds of placed traps later on when everyone is using them?

I'd love to be able to fill a town with traps and just sit there watching from in the bushes.

But if I were to place all those traps, then piss off to the other end of the map, some hapless group shouldn't all be insta-crawl 2 hours later because of what I did.

Though, that would be funny for the people who were watching said group.

You'll just end up seeing places like NWAF covered in these with nobody caring to stick around to watch.

I've already run into these traps and died. Last weeks deaths:

Ran into fallen tree, impaled on branches, instant death.

Fell through a bottomless pit North of Pobeda Dam, instant death.

M67 rigged to your dead buddy so the next person to loot without examine body gets frag in the face. Bear trap that breaks your legs and makes you scream like a girl = to a enfield shot.
