narcolepticd 10 Posted September 18, 2012 (edited) Here is a suggestions, made a quick search in the forums but didnt find anything, probably because no one uses tags. When camping I would either bury my things or put them in a bag and hang the bag up in a tree to discourage bears. I think this could tie in well with DayZ. You would have to make the amount of stored items something reasonable. For example, you wouldnt be able to put a tent's worth of items up in a tree without being noticed. But I was thinking, how about 10-15 items in a bag. Lets say, small tools, nvgs, rangefinders, binoculars, food and ammo, etc. Close the bag and hide it a few branches up.I don't think it would be any harder to find than a camo tent.Input greatly appreciated, flaming is not..Thanks for your time. hawkygaming 43 Posted September 18, 2012 Ehh nice idea. I suppose Metal Detectors are needed to search for loot piles too?
narcolepticd 10 Posted September 18, 2012 I think metal detectors lying around would be a little unrealistic. I wouldnt be a fan if they implemented burying items, but it makes sense, I would do it. I believe that if someone was to bury their items, there should be a pretty obvious change to the dirt/environment/landscape around it.
catface.jpg 75 Posted September 18, 2012 Beans to you both. Better hiding of gear is a natural extension of the current situation in Chernarus. Theft is rampant. I would not leave all of my shit in a tent in a RL situation like that. I'd bury it, put it up a tree, stash it in hidey-holes in buildings, etc. I like the idea of more hiding places, as well as the idea of a way for people to still find my stuff if they look hard enough with the right tools.

narcolepticd 10 Posted September 18, 2012 Another thought came to mind. I would want to be able to find other person's tree stashes if I am scanning the forest, but I wouldn't want it to be impossible or very easy.I think it would be cool to spot someone's tree stash and go running up to it (avoiding possible bear traps) only to realize that it's a map made (purely cosmetic) bee hive, I think they would like kinda similar. I'd be a little upset, but that would make finding actual items that much more rewarding.Or from a bandit perspective, set up some bear traps around that bee hive and wait for some unsuspecting person to run up thinking that there is stash there with loot. Haruto 10 Posted September 18, 2012 If you want metal detectors why not give them a 0.18% to be on any Zed along the coast. That would translate to the random guy combing the beach for treasure. Don't let it be an item inside any buildings or lieing around anywhere, just on the random beachcomber who died doing what he loved.
intensity (DayZ) 312 Posted September 18, 2012 It's a survival horror game, not a bloody treasure hunt!
narcolepticd 10 Posted September 18, 2012 (edited) It's a survival horror game, not a bloody treasure hunt!I am aware that it is a survival horror game, but the emphasis is still survival. And in a survival situation I know that I would not be able to carry everything I need/want on my body. So what would I do? I would hide it. Instead of having 100s of tents lying around, I was merely suggesting an alternative method to hiding items other than the goofy tents. Something I believe is realistic and a method I would use in a survival situation. Edited September 18, 2012 by narcolepticd

How about in some kind of sporting goods store as well? I believe that if metal detectors were used, loot searching would probably have a .001% chance of success unless there was some kind of clue that and item was buried nearby, i.e upturned dirt, grass, leaves or piles of dirt. That's in the game mechanics!"

This post wasnt about changing game mechanics, it was about adding alternative methods to hiding gear. What's wrong with some variety?
bazbake 456 Posted September 19, 2012 The first comment was that people were stealing from him. The second was that it was unrealistic. Just pointing out that people only seem to care about realism when it helps make the game easier for them.
DemonGroover 8836 Posted September 19, 2012 I know that i would never put valuable stuff in a tent.I would be much more inclined to hide it in a building or bury it somewhere, even under a pile of rocks if need be.
Michaelvoodoo25 3120 Posted September 19, 2012 A bit like Stalker? finding loot stashes all over the place, but collected and hidden stashes not at all like the loot spawns in game?!
narcolepticd 10 Posted September 19, 2012 A bit like Stalker? finding loot stashes all over the place, but collected and hidden stashes not at all like the loot spawns in game?!I've never played Stalker. But when I mean Tree Stashes I am thinking bags that you can find as loot and put up into trees with your items inside for semi-safekeeping. These tree stashes wouldnt be server spawned but player made.
jabberwock (DayZ) 24 Posted September 19, 2012 I like the rope + bag = tree stash idea. They can sway in the wind to make them more detectable but currently tents are super obvious.

Needs to be semi-obvious, but not obvious enough where it does do any good to hide it. I would also like things up in trees that would look like the tree stash, i.e. Beehive.
