The constant discussion about 'hacking'.

For a while now i've been reading all these posts about hacks, and in these topics there is always the same discussion between people who say it's unplayable and others saying it's not that bad. The discussion itself is pointless, ofcourse we all experience it differently, but what people don't take into effect is that we all play on different servers with diffrerent amounts of players.

What i've noticed on my own server, is that when playing with <10 players, there are nearly no problems and hackers seem to stay away. But every bloody time i get over that number of players, the server gets annihilated and i'm being forced to restart over and over. With this in mind, not being able to lock my server, and my server filling up with over 20 players a day;

It's such utter bullshit that people claim 'it's not that bad'. Just because you didn't encounter much hackers on your end, doesn't mean you can say to people to 'stop your whining, man up, go back to battlefield or COD'. Such stupid remarks, beyond my comprehension.. This is survival! This is game! No it's NOT. How the hell are we supposed to survive a nuke or a player shield or whatnot?

Hackers are there, in many numbers, frolicking around like killer clowns murdering the entire server and then hop to the next one to boost their enormous narcissistic personalities. Here are some numbers what it is doing to the game.

September 10th 92.000 players in the last 24 hours (checked myself)

Seems healthy for an up and coming populair game. Sarcasm aside, i only type this because i like the game and hope to see it succeed in the future. But i'm not sure the future game really stands a chance if people have to wait for 3 more months while the mod is unplayable and more importantly while competitors are on the rise.

Had to do something while listening to a boring lecture at Uni, so i felt compelled to make a topic.

You are absolutely right, cheating is a huge problem, you have to remember though that the stats don't track users playing on private servers/hives, of which there are a growing number, many of which are now running Gotcha-AntiHack amongst other anti cheat measures and as a result have very little cheating.

Your figures don't take into account the people playing on private hives, which is many. Also, now that the initial hype has died down many people will have tried it and decided it's not for them or will simply be waiting for the standalone. People don't like it, but really hacking will only be dealt with properly when the standalone is released. If it's good it will succeed, if it's rubbish it will fail, simple as.

Getting a server with no hackers for some is a fluke while for some they just aren't so Lucky (I joined a 4 player server, had 1 hacker)

So everyone's different and have different thoughts on hackers. Hopefully the hackers eventually gtfo and die down to make this mod a lot more enjoyable and legitimate.

(Fraggle will spank me again) but the only people that can help at the moment are the complacent ArmA 2 team who pretend that they have done the millions recently due to the brilliance of their platform and not due to the DayZ mod. 95% of the customer base have bought ArmA 2 for the mod of course. Fortunately the industry and the players will punish this behavior. Competitors are just behind the corner.

I've been fortunate in that I haven't really come across a malicious hacker for several weeks now, although I have bumped into a "friendly" hacker or two, but they weren't intending on nuking the server or anything. Still wrong IMO though.

Hackers definitely are a major issue in this game, and it's one that clearly the developers can't really control at the moment.

I just don't understand why people hack this game. Honestly, it's a fun game, if you need scripts to spawn in tons of weapons and to give yourself god mode, then you're playing the wrong game. What's worse is that it is obviously turning players off from the game. Every few hours there's someone posting in the forums about how they're quitting until hacking is stopped. On top of that, new players would be extremely deterred from playing if they can barely get off the coast thanks to script kiddies and griefers.

Unfortunately, I think the answer is that we'll have to wait for the standalone to come out before we see a serious drop/end to hackers.

@ DiaKoona - Lol, no I won't. And like I said, if the team release an amazing game, this will all become a distant memory and we can tell our Grandchildren about those crazy times we all had arguing about hackers during the testing phase of DayZ. If they cock the game up then it won't sell and we'll all still be here feeling sorry for ourselves or collecting gold coins in alternative zombie survival games (if they ever become playable).

Couldn't agree with this more. What can we do about it? Not much!

All we can do is wait patiently for the standalone, and hope they have made it much more secure.

If people think there will be no hacking what so ever in the standalone, they are being incredibly niave in my opinion.

No matter how good your coders are that write the game/anticheat/protection routines, the harsh reality is that somewhere in the world there will be someone that is much better at coding than them.

Cheaters/Hackers in a permanent world is different than cheating in a traditional game (ie: in a FPS based on "rounds"). A single cheater may ruin the experience collected by several players per days.. weeks.. whatever. This is why the cheaters/hackers issue should be the VERY TOP priority for a game like this. It should come before anything else (including the contents) and you should put more effort into it (more that a dev team would do for a "normal" game). I did not see this kind of effort so far, i see the devs talking about the contents, about what will be dayz, about caves, dogs, and realistic anymations... but when you ask about the cheaters, then you read: "we know the problem, and we'll handle it..". This is a mere promise, and i hope (when/if the game will be out) it won't be too late to adjust the aim, coz no matter how good the game will look, if the cheaters remains (at this level), all this project is going to fail: i'll personally buy it the first day it'll be available, but as soon i'll find the first cheater, i'll ask for a refund.. (i won't drink the "this is alpha" story anymore).

the growing trend to get around the hacker issue is to enroll/play on PW protected servers..

it suks having to have this be the solution, but so far it does seem to be working..

i'll gladly play on private/PW servers if it means my deaths/game play isnt spoiled by sciddies..

I have taken to a private hive for now. I am marking time until the standalone is released. From time to time I log on in the public domain, but not for any great length of time. To me this is a WIP, and I view it as such.

The mod has given me an immense amount of pleasure and I have been fortunate to to have been hacked too often. As I have mentioned before...I cannot comprehend the idea of hacking. Some people purchases a game, then destroy the game play for themselves and others by scripting...I simply do not understand the logic.

Roll on standalone!!!

The hacking is a shame to every MMO game. Of course we know a lot of games where cheating is an important topic .. but dayz ... no, dayz isn't just one of those games

DayZ is, sorry, was a fabolous piece of code. I never felt into this kind of nightmares like dayz was coming up with at the first weeks/month

If you got a bit of good loot, and even got a plan "where to run next", you were just like FukCoYuARsEHoeL if someone was just a second faster than you, or if some of those nice bugs just broke your legs and you're be eaten by the zeds - But exactly this was all about dayz -> Fear, every single second

i joined 4 servers today ... and thats a fact, i have the evidence of at least one hacker at EVERY single server.

One of those servers just had 3! people on it, and one player was using the navigator and teleporting hack, because he chased me

Furthermore there were big ammo boxes, and surprise, almost every player got at least a DMR as primary ...

(BTW, with the new version of DayZ, there's too much weaponry in loot, imho)

So afterall i decided to stop with dayz, because you cant be sure, never and on not a single server, even the passworded ones, because the cheating itself is so damn easy

There isn't much to understand really. They get their enjoyment from ruining other peoples enjoyment. It really is that simple...unfortunately for all of us. :(

It's nothing to do with Rocket & co. The flaws in the ArmA2 engine are down to the ArmA/ArmA2 team if anyone. And even saying that is unfair to them. I bought ArmA2 3 years ago when it first came out. I also bought ArmA eons ago. What alot of people do not realise is this :-

ArmA was made for such a hardcore minority of fps/war sim enthusiasts. It really was a niche game. Because all of the playerbase was so hardcore...they would never in a million years contemplate cheating. Because of this, the ArmA2 engine was designed from the ground up to be so customisable and accessible. It is only now that DayZ has brought ArmA2 to the masses, that this very trusting and open ended game has been so easy for the masses of unscrupulous scripting gimps to cheat in.

Yes ^ Though apart from that and the physics, the ARMA 2 engine is great for DayZ, as it feels so damn realistic!

I doesnt said, or want to say, that rocket is that kind of disgrace. Goddamn no, no way, ever

I tried to mention that he created that, i dunno howto describe dayz, that great kind of new-age-survival-mmo-army mod. So many players are joining dayz every single day

But those hacker-idiots are degrading all those experiences, and bring a lot of honest players to the dead end situation, that there is just no other way for them, than to leave that great modification.

THAT's the shame. Thats embarassing. For rocket, for his helpers, and for every single, honest gamer

The only way to reallyavoid hackers is to be allowed to password protect your server and only let in people you trust. As long as we pay for socialist server hosting with no control, hackers will find a way to screw you. I have played for a few months and was just killed by a hacker this weekend for the first time. It was as you said when the server was getting very corwded. Five minutes before I told my brother we should log now its getting too crowded and we're going to get killed but he wanted to check the Stary tents first, lol.

yeah, i agree that the hacker problem is bad, i was just teleported and killed by one. i made my first trip to north airfield and found my first heli crash site also, which was nice, 5 mins later "ur dead" lol.

but anyways i have had fun/my moneys worth with this mod, i love it. eagerly waitin for the standalone.

btw, is there any blog or site where i could read about standalone?

Yeah private hives are my go to now, always saves, same type of players. nicer people ( strangely enough ).
