Art Style

Recommended Posts

Aside from the graphics and glitches and stuff... How does everyone feel about the art style?

I love how things are at night, however depending on the sky, your eyes should be able to adjust to the dark just a little better.

But I think the game could be a little scarier. I have played quite a few games in the past, and very few games have an overall sense of dread that would fit a zombie game. But one game I played actually felt perfect, and it wasn't even a horror game. Don't flame me for this, just think about it for a second.

The Darkness. Ya the first one, not the cell shaded sequel. Not really the best game or anything, but the art style was so... Dark and brooding. The lighting at night just felt so eerie. Like it would have been so awesome for a zombie to stumble out of the dark. I know other people have agreed with me on the subject that the game was more of an action game but the lighting and art style actually felt like it would have made one of the scariest games ever if implemented correctly.

Anyone else think the DayZ standalone should get a somewhat darker Art Style?

I actually like that DayZ isn't a total dark, devoid of life, post humanity game, but I agree that it could be a little creepier. I don't think DayZ should be scary as in ghosts and hauntings and such where things happen that are generally unsettling or downright scary (although its hilarious when you see things like that on youtube), but should be as if humanity has ceased to exist and nature is taking control again. Sort of like what you see in abandoned parts of the former USSR, where the streets are cracked with grass growing through, apartments and other buildings are empty and stand there eerily like a tombstone for humanity. Of course, (excuse me if I'm wrong), we don't know how long after the infections began this mod takes place, so depending on whether its been weeks or years, the feel should be different; if it's been a month, the buildings shouldn't look like they're going to fall over, but if its been years, then its a different story.

Also, I love the nature aspect of the mod, how you spend a lot of time in the woods or in rural areas, so I hope that the standalone can expand upon the feeling of a place that has been reverted to nature and had zombies thrown in.

Just my $.02 (or 0.0156€ or 0.0125£, your choice!)

Hello there

Well, I do agree somewhat that art style can add a vast mount to an experience. But for me reality is quite enough,so the more realistic the game could be the better. I don't revel in gore but like things to be as true as they can.

On the other hand It would be nice (if it gave no advantage) to be able to choose different shaders to the game, so one could view it in say a more mangaesque way or monochrome for eg.

For me choice is key.

Anyone with any experience playing The Darkness know what I was talking about earlier?

I like post-apocalyptic games, but I would love to see something modern and creepy. The darkness felt sometimes like the streets were just empty and eerie, but the world was still there.

If I could choose a time the game takes place, I'd actually prefer that the game take place just after the outbreak peaked. Nature hasn't taken over urban areas yet, and the zombie population is really high. The power is flickering in places and shut off in others. Buildings haven't toppled over yet, but the roads are littered with car crashes and corpses.

Spontanious Idea... What if corpses actually decomposed as the game ages? Like when the standalone game first comes out, corpses and zombies look fresh, but after say, a few weeks, they start to show obvious signs of rotting, eventually leaving behind a skeleton by the end of the year, and then the cycle starts over for those who missed out on the initial fresh zombies.

As suggested by burtondrummerNY (second post), maybe some decay for the city would be good (considering how very little zombies there are, yeah, the infection started long ago...).

I think they did just that for the I am alive game and that other game I can't remember the name ... (featuring a man and a little girl as protagonists)

i feel theres actually no art style, its a "realistic" game, so nothing you can call an art style.
