kernalpanic 35 Posted June 12, 2012 I think we need an indicator (like the temperature, visual and noise gauges) that would start flashing when you smelled a fire or smoke. I know it sounds ridiculous at first though but hear me out... People usually light fires to cook meat. If another player happens to be in an area or downwind from them they should be able to smell that fire, thus alerting them that they are not alone and that someone maybe nearby. That could then spawn a couple different actions; turn around and get the hell out of there or turn your attention onto hunting down your prey in hope of finding a camp or wandering traveler. this might be going overboard I know, and I will probably catch a flame or two but I thought it would be an interesting mechanic that I surely haven't seen in another title before. But then again, eating glorious beans and sucking down pepsi's in a game were also new to me just a month ago in a game... Keep up the awesome work rocket and the rest of the dayz dev team. Awesome mod, awesome execution!!!
zak757 146 Posted June 12, 2012 I don't see it drastically changing gameplay, but I don't see a reason NOT to add it in.Sure, why not? Just don't make it so you can smell players by themselves, having to roll around is the only way to reliably sneak players in this game.
Existential 1 Posted June 13, 2012 But as it stands right now, most fires are only lit for about 20 seconds, because most fires are cooking fires and meat cooks instantly. Now, I'm not dying to sit around for 20 minutes watching my meat sizzle, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to have to set your food up on spits and retrieve it 5-10 minutes later. This would force you to put a little more consideration into your cooking sites, and you might even have to defend your meals-in-progress.
haviv[3rdid] 57 Posted June 13, 2012 You'll think twice about those beans and sardines once there's a smell-o-meter!
Dawn (DayZ) 27 Posted June 13, 2012 I think this would be fun and as Existential said, this might make people even More cautious about locations and such.. Which will only bring even more realism into Dayz.
combatcomm1 234 Posted June 13, 2012 I had been planning on suggesting this! +1 dude. This is a major negative to campfires that is needed. Prob easy to script as well as long as wind isnt taken into effect.May I also suggest, not to thread jack, sound effects to chopping wood. A negative that is needed there and also very easy to add. luciddose 23 Posted June 13, 2012 Good idea, the game really takes into account human senses which translate well except for touch and smell which because of the limitations of digital media can not be introduced to their full potential. Although a simulation of it would be awesome to some degree, you get cold, while you don't feel the cold the same way you hear or see in the game it is well simulated so why not smell. perhaps an indication of smell from dead bodies, campfire, or gas could be a good start. there is wind in the game that effects long ranged projectiles, I wonder how hard it would be to have smell directed by the wind. Although it is something to consider, the sense of smell is very important in terms of hunting, deer and other animals that smell you coming would force you to mask your scent. I would love to see this implemented to some degree and if they do add dogs to the game this can be put into play even more so by your companion who is more advanced at smelling things out than humans are capable of.
