witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 The new beta patch for Arma2OA has implemented an alternative method of handling tone mapping. It seems quite inconsistent and unrealistic/not authentic. The degree at which the gamma is dimmed across the board depending on where you're looking and where you're standing is unsettling to me.Some might agree, some might not. Just putting this out there. You be the judge. Here is the issue: http://imgur.com/a/sX5MBHere is an example fix: http://imgur.com/a/GUCmZAnother pronounced example of the issue: http://imgur.com/a/5SVTB (Late dusk).Another, less pronounced example of the issue: http://imgur.com/a/UBQUT (Early dusk).I realize that this is most likely not a DayZ issue, so I've reproduced this post on the BI forums. Cappy (DayZ) 6 Posted June 12, 2012 ''absolutely unacceptable'' << that made me lolyou right buddy,. best you leave this absolutely unacceptable game,.. don't the let door kill you on the way out, that shit happens
witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 Fixed that overly dramatic statement. :)How nice of you to chime in!
PeteOfButcherBay 17 Posted June 12, 2012 looks ok to me.. don't see what your problem is.
Sarcasmo 2 Posted June 12, 2012 The problem comes at nighttime. You thought it was black before? Now it's literally black.
Kuro1n 1 Posted June 12, 2012 Well I think I had issues with this last night as well... Joined a night server and it was completely black with max lighting + gamma during night... Not just slightly dark but completely as in it looked like all textures were black and I could only make out the sky and nothing else.
witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 Time to whip out the flares then. :/
PeteOfButcherBay 17 Posted June 12, 2012 yup and im glad for it, no more gamma warriors.
Kuro1n 1 Posted June 12, 2012 I mean as dark as this (with max light settings) random screenshot I found:
Sarcasmo 2 Posted June 12, 2012 Yes, just like that.
witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 Honestly I was hoping for the night-time to be dark even for us gamma-warriors, but this massive difference in brightness depending on where you're looking during daytime caught me off guard. If it's the price we have to pay for a realistic night (im not sure nights should be THAT dark, but hey), so be it. But if it can be tweaked, please see if it's possible to tone it down (i realize i should probably have posted this on BI's forum, as the beta patches aren't really dayz). Cappy (DayZ) 6 Posted June 12, 2012 Just to point out,. gammer is there to correct your tones, not to make the game playable at night, thats cheating.Night time is dark, get over it,. during the day in a shaded area things will be darker, i don't see the problem.the pictures you shows seem perfectly find to me, exactly like I've been experiencing in the game some time now. Kuro1n 1 Posted June 12, 2012 Yes night should be dark, obviously. However you shouldn't have to turn up the light settings just to be able to see the sky. I'm currently visiting my parents who live in the middle of the forest with no streetlights or shit closeby and I can walk the forest at night (in fact I do so without flashlight every night at 2:30 AM when leaving my friends place). witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 Yep. I live out in the forest, and it's perfectly possible to navigate during night-time. I'm pretty sure the guys who love the unrealistic pitchblackness have never been outside of a city in their life :P
Sarcasmo 2 Posted June 12, 2012 Animals have built in low-light vision. The only time I've ever seen actual pitch blackness was in a deep cavern with the flashlights off. That was some claustrophobic shit. That's what I have in this game, in the middle of an open field.
witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 If the stars and the moon had proper light-source properties the problem would be solved. If it's a cloudy night, then sure; hit me with your blackest black...

witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 So you're down with not seeing at all unless flares are flying everywhere, or you have the sub-1% droprate nvg's?Surely there could be a compromise; a way to remove the possibility of gamma warriors, but leave the possibility of actually seeing during a clear night...No need to be so either/or! It makes cherno into a totally different environment.
witherfield 0 Posted June 12, 2012 It's a bit too radical for me to do what PeteOfButcherBay is hinting towards... :)I guess I'll either adapt or get out.

I base my reasons on how reality works, and in this case fact is you can see in the dark after a while, there is not much light sources in DayZ during night unless you make some yourself so light pollution shouldn't be much of an issue. However the game can probably not recreate it in a realistic fashion thus I reason the game should be set somewhere in between. The people cheating with gamma are obviously not good for a healthy game environment but rather adjust it so gamma doesn't do as much instead of making it completely pitch-black (even with full light settings). Some reading for you:http://webvision.med.utah.edu/book/part-viii-gabac-receptors/light-and-dark-adaptation/

I have never had issues navigating at night outside in DayZ. Never had to tune my settings ingame - because I actually took the time to properly match my monitor settings with my room light and playing video games. Not much light to find around there I can assure you. :)
