High end realistic graphics vs Stylized graphics

Recommended Posts

Was having a conversation with my friend about this and I was just curious to find out what you guys prefer

Option 1: High end realistic graphics (like currently exists for day-z on the arma 2 engine)

Pro: Highly immersive.

Drawback : Cannot support large numbers of players per server. Leads to deserted map except for coast.

Option 2: Stylized graphics

Pro: Can support larger numbers of players per server.

Drawback : Not as immersive as arma-2 engine.

Not going to insert a poll because the graphical style of the standalone is already fixed. Was just curious as to player preference.

You can make a high-end graphics engine that supports lots of players on the server. Graphics aren't necessarily what limits the amount of players. Most of the graphics and geometry can be handled locally. So for me, option 1 is the obvious answer, even if it did limit the player base somewhat due to higher demands on peoples own pc's.

Graphics dosnt have anything to do with the network code mate.

Doh ...

It doesn't ? Its all client side?

So if big expensive servers were run they would be able to support the 600+ players you see on mmo's while still maintaining the realistic high end look of arma 2? Thats pretty cool. Case closed then =)

We are already there is terms of photo realism, just lighting needs abit of tweaking now.

In terms of "Player Amount VS Visual Pleasure" -depends on the style of game intended.

I think a balance between the two is a good point. I like ultra-realistic games as they're just amazing. I also like stylistic graphics because they're fun.

You're able to have games like Mirror's Edge, which is stylised and realistic at the same time, that game was beautiful and fun.
