Close range aiming is screwed up.

Recommended Posts

First of all, let me say that im a former Quake 2 world champion, Quake 3 CTF EU champion, i have played Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 3 in one of Europes best competitive clans and i generally consider myself having a good aim, both in games and in real life (former army Captain).

Close range aiming is very much fucked up in DayZ.

I dont know why, and i dont know if its an game-engine problem, or just a bug somewhere, but in general its incredibly hard to predict your movements and aiming when trying to hit something at close range. I think consensus regarding aiming is that it should be easier to hit something at close range than long range (unless transversal speed is just ridiculous)... And i dont find this reflected in this game right now.

Maybe something that should be under consideration to fix in the future/standalone game?

A little more detail would be beneficial to the discussion. How is it fucked up? Are you talking about iron sights? or the 3d crosshairs? Firing from the hip? Do you use aiming dead zone?

Yeah I need a little more detail too. Not sure exactly what your commenting on.

It's ArmA. It's much different to quake and battlefield. Try your hand at single player, and you'll get used to it.

I have more than 300 hours in Arma II SP. I dont think its a "getting used to" type of thing, and thats why i started this thread to begin with. Im kinda "used to getting used to" new FPS games, if you know what i mean? Im used to tweaking settings and controls to have them "perfect" and make aiming easier.

No im talking about movement prediction and the ability to keep a target in my sights at close range. The sights i have no problem with.

Usually when you start playing a new game your not used to the controls, the "feel" for the engine, if you know what i mean? With DayZ i find that that "feel" is never the same. Its like there is some randomness for where you end up pointing your gun when trying to hit a target at close range. Its very subtle, but its there.

Ya, I guess I get it... But I've really had no problem with the aiming, even though I am also *gasp* a cod player and a battlefield 3 player.

I'm still pretty confused as to what you're talking about. I understand what you're saying, I just haven't experienced it myself.

Do you use aiming deadzone? What weapon? Or is this with all of them?

Something else, if you double tap - on the numpad you'll get a larger field of view which might help with closer targets, I know it helps me when I'm getting swarmed by zombies.

Yeah, DayZ has some weird mouse controls. If I move my mouse slow, I turn quickly, if I move it fast, I turn slowly. This varies depending on if you're crouched or laying down or whatever. There's something else there I can't quite put my finger on, but the aiming is definitely off compared to most FPS and I haven't been able to fix it.

Remember in arma the bullet spawns from the chamber of your weapon, not from the center of your camera or crosshair. You have to adjust for ballistics on distances and adjust for elevated sights in CQB.

On extreme close ranges you might want to ignore your sights and make corrections based on bullet decals/dust clouds. Sometimes bringing up your sights is worth it, sometimes you want to spray and pray.

Some clan mates have been discussing if there actually might be some randomness built into the engine? To compensate for something (weight? wind?)?

I have had no problem with aiming in this after other fps games... Tough arma had stupid "expo" as a default, that your crosshair moves slower first and after certain speed it gets fast if you know what I mean.. removed that and got much better.

So you could turn slowly and accurately but also you could turn very fast and more only with the same amount mouse movement..

There is setting in one of the config files to remove this..

I understand its pretty hard to get what im saying... im not sure if i make any sense myself... :P But i can swear that there is some sort of randomness for where your aim ends up when you move your mouse to aim at close ranges.

Most (all?) games have their own "feel" for where your aim ends up, and you quickly learn to compensate or just get the hangs of it, but in DayZ i feel i dont get that precission that i should have at close ranges. Sure, i win most fights, but the aim is somehow messed up. You dont feel confident that your gun will point exactly where you think it will. There are NO problems at long ranges though.

Interesting, i have not changed any config files by hand. (dont know how battleye will feel about that?)

Is there some keywords i can use to search for this on Google? On how to tune it?

I blame dispersion. Pick a target at close range and do the obvious, aim at something and see where your bullets go. I think Rocket and others this in the past. That being said i still find arma to be a much better 'feel' as a shooter compared to the other point and shoot games you mentioned.. at close and long range, imo . :)

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about and think ARMA2 is probably the best I've seen at authentic ballistics, especially as compared to the other games you mentioned. I think it's what others have pointed out already, that the crosshairs are giving you a false sense of "this is where the bullet will go". Like has been mentioned, the HUD "crosshairs" are kind of zeroed at a distance and start to mean very little up close.. If you're talking about the bullet going 10m off randomly from where your sights are when you have the gun pulled to your face, that's another story. So, I'm also in the camp of not knowing at all what you mean when you say things are weird/wonky. A video may best assist you in conveying your issue. Can you make one?

Ye it is very weird. You can notice it easily with auto weps.

I trapped a guy in the shed today. He had no idea what was going on, as i came to the front to pop off 8-12 rnds and move to the back to do the same thing. Spent 6 and a half mags doing the same shit till he went down...the fucker still atls out of the game and i never get the kill. i mean point-fucking-blank shooting with scope

By the way it was m16a4 acog

The default zeroing is 300 if I'm not mistaken, could have been the cause?

I keep hearing this zeroing thing, but I have to wonder. At point-blank range your target takes up about 15-20% of your screen. How would zeroing your weapon make your target easier to hit unless you were giving him a haircut? That just seems like a flaw with the game.

Now, if your gun barrel passes THROUGH your target and you shoot out the other side, this might make sense. It would be shitty programming, but it would make sense.

I started aiming for the head at first. After the first clip i switched to chest. I had to put at least 40 rounds in to his body after that easy
