flx1 1 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) Hey my dear Community,so I started playing the Day Z Mod after 5 Hours of Let Play´s on Youtube, so i was aware that there might be some problems with the game.As the Title says I´m suffering from terribe FPS. My average FPS would be about 18-22, with 27 fps outside on the street (while 17 fps in the woods) and around 14-18 in Citys. And these are the results of carefully attempts to optimize my system and the Game.I turned the screen (and graphic) solution down to 1024 x 768, turned off AA and AF and so forth. The Game looks so terrible now (with all the flickering and unsharpness) but would be complete unplayable otherwise.I did the RAMdisk thing, added those fancy start parameters in Dayzcommander, used the game booser and modded the arma ini files. Is there anything left I can do, to get a fair compromiss between fps and looks? Here´s my system (laptop):Intel Core i7 2670qm 2.20 gHz8GB RamnVidia GT540M Edited September 3, 2012 by flx1
razorman 15 Posted September 3, 2012 Laptops are not for gaming.....However, this game is dependant on the server & how fast it is, you can join one server & have great fps, join another & it's as laggy as hell.Find one that works well for you & stick to it, look for servers with pings of less than 30 & DONT use a wireless connection, use a cable direct to lappy from your router & see the difference. Also there are some excellent tweak guides on these very forums.Remember the server controls how well the game plays, if it's a shit server on a low spec machine with poor internet connection it will lag irrespective of what kind of machine the player has.Good luck. flx1 1 Posted September 3, 2012 Thanks Razorman,so far I always was playing on Servers with a ping of around 38, so i´ll keep an open eye on that < 30 server. But yea, I already am using a cable connection, since the Internet here isn´t so great (dl 1 Mb/s, ul 210kbyte/s)And yes I know that Laptops are not meant to be gaming beasts. But after all I never had a Problem like this before.BF 3 is playable and so is Skyrim (with high settings).
Mos1ey 6301 Posted September 3, 2012 Being able to run BF3 means nothing.Welcome to ARMA II, the most poorly optimised piece of shit known to man.
razorman 15 Posted September 3, 2012 This game is like no other, it's a massive cpu hog, the faster the better, even with my uber rig i average only 30-40fps in towns, woodland is the high 60's.Imagine that the cpu has to calculate a trillion things at once right down to the individual leaves on trees moving & bugs flying around, that's just the start.A good test is to run a single mission in Arma2 with everything set to high, that will indicate what kind of performance you should find on a fast server. The server also sets your graphics options in the main, you can mess with AA & shadows but not draw distance etc.Good luck. ActionManZlt 160 Posted September 3, 2012 2.20 gHzThat's your problem. The Arma 2 engine runs best on high-speed CPUs, and otherwise is bottlenecked. Reducing all the graphics settings doesn't help if you're bottlenecked by a slow CPU.Have a search around for any overclocking utilities for your particular laptop and see if you can boost the clock-speed. flx1 1 Posted September 3, 2012 Yeah I figured that.My CPU has this boost thing where it goes up to 3.0 ghz, maybe I can trigger this permanent.
Alternative_Alien 1 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) do you have the other ARMA II expansions, British Armed Forces, and Combined Operations, if so get rid of them if your having performance issues? I did as DayZ was unplayable! So, I uninstalled everything so I'm only running Arma II, Arrowhead, and DayZ, and it runs perfectly :)I'm using a really old Alienware M17, that over heats all the time, but DayZ is working fine with all the other stuff gone :) Edited September 3, 2012 by Alternative_Alien
Zeppa 562 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) You do that(overclock) and its not about the ping on server that can make poor FPS. You can join like 50ms server and still have fps around 10-20 fps, some server gets worse over the day. Sometimes your fps gets better if you reconnect to the server.I dont know why some servers are shit.. maybe its the server itself, not the connection.. altough it seems that same servers will work better for some ppl (joining server that has many ppl inside and you get poor fps). flx1 1 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) @ Alternative_AlienI bought "Arma II Combined Operations" on Steam, which installed Arma II and Operation Arrowhead. These two are in my steam game library. Edited September 3, 2012 by flx1
Bungle (DayZ) 14 Posted September 3, 2012 Turning your settings too low will force the game to use more CPU and less video card, which is a bad thing. I saw a framerate improvement when I went from Very Low settings to High settings.
flx1 1 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) Yeah, I guess I´ll put everything back to high, if it´s lagging anyway it might aswell look good. There´s another thing I noticed. I get like +15 fps more if I look into the sky. Don´t know if this information is useful :) Edited September 3, 2012 by flx1

I saw a framerate improvement when I went from Very Low settings to High settings.Damn really that will work?I feel like this might be what happened to me, for whatever reason i can't remember i turned down a lot of my settings and the game is still unplayable for me. Also I've recently I've noticed my GPU use only at like 30-40% and my framerate dropped significantly to unplayable levels such as 5-8 FPS I'll have to try turning my settings up again and see if this can help me out. flx1 1 Posted November 2, 2012 Hey Guys, just wanted to respond cause I kinda found a solution: resolution. All I had to do was to turn the resolution down to 640x480 and windowed mode and turn AA and shadows off.Now I have playable 30 fps in the wild and 25 fps in the cities.
