should there be regular resets on characters

Recommended Posts

This is a horrible idea. What if their character is only a few days old whenever this reset rolls out? It punishes all players. Dupes and hacking need to be dealt with, but punishing players is not the way to do it. Its unfair. You keep saying no one lives that long so it wont matter, but this thread is full of people it obviously matters to.

This is an official petition to the devs.

I would like VanillaDaisy's char reset every month until he screams uncle.

That way he can see how stupid his idea was.

This just would not work - at what point does the 30 day thing kick in? Per character? Per server? Per Entire DayZ world?

If it's based on how long YOUR character has been alive, what's the incentive for playing? The majority of players may never hit 30 days, but it's the POSSIBILITY of being able to survive that long and beyond that keeps people playing. If you remove the possibility of survivng long term players are going to be even more inclined to view the mod as a deathmatch. For me, I try to survive and occasionally improve my lot by trying to find better gear - taking away the notion that I COULD survive forever would completely spoil the game.

Psychologically speaking.

If it's a global thing (everyone is reset at once) - how would that be fair to someone who has just started out the day before? Suppose you've survived successfully for 3 days, and then the main server resets you because it's hit the 30 day mark - how is that fair?

Taking this approach to deal with a minority who abuse the game mechanics (and it IS a minority - not everyone who has a DMR with NVG and a ghillie suit is hacking/glitching/duping) is silly. It's like imposing a curfew for every adult in a town based on the fact that last night two people got drunk and smashed up a shop window i.e punishing/putting constraints on the majority based on the actions of a minority.

Duping and exploiting are issues - but this isn't the way to deal with it.

there wont be any tents you retard. sorry to insult you but shit bro learn to read. COMPLETE RESET' date=' NO MORE GEAR FOR ANYONE. MAKAROV AND BEANS. [/quote']

You should learn to express yourself properly, because you only mentioned a character reset in your opening post. Idiot.

This post is pretty massive, and takes every quote by VanillaDragon that I could bother replying to. Hopefully after this post VD will realise why his idea is stupid and that he should just deal with death rather than try to ruin a game.

no one lives for over a month.

Until you prove that no one has managed to live for over a month or near enough that time' date=' this point is entirely moot.

the only people who this would affect is the people who farm the shit out of the good loot spawns and keep oodles of tents filled with gear for every time they die.

No it wouldn't, it would affect anyone who stores items legitly, such as vehicle parts, medical supplies and other things, just because some people exploit the system doesn't mean that there aren't honest players out there.

this game rewards time sinkers not skill.

Time sinking in this IS a skill' date=' you can't just hop on and go "I'll just play a few rounds", you have to make sure you can't get interuppted during play and that your time will be dedicated to playing it.

why is it retarded? i gave my reasoning, whats yours. besides being a server hopping farmer with a tent full of shit somewhere?

Posts like this make you just seem like a whiny baby who got Bean'd by someone with NVGs and a DMR and thinks he was a hacker. Everyone is giving their reasons, you're just ignoring them because you think you're in the right.

it removes any incentive for people to server hop farming loot spawns and filling tents with gear for every time they die.

No it doesn't' date=' it'll just make them be more active so they can go out in style before the reset.

Also, filling tents with gear is a legit tactic. Just because you can't use tents doesn't mean the ones who do are hackers.

so lets say they fixed the problem of server hopping today. we just let farmers and dupers have all their ill gotten loot?

thanks for exploiting the game, keep your gear as a reward?

It's an alpha, keeping gear isn't guaranteed with each update anyway. And what happens to the LEGIT players that have good gear?

thanks for testing the alpha, keep your gear as a reward

how would a reset once a month change anything? who hear has been alive for over a month? ever? [/quote

You're thinking about this all wrong though.

The way you describe it' date= every 30 days the entire database is reset.

Day 1: Player 1 starts, only plays on weekends, plays every weekend he can

Day 15: Player 2 starts, lasts till Day 25 and gets cap'd, lost all his great gear and the tent he died near

Day 25: Player 3 starts, caps player 2 and takes all his gear, but has to log off and can't play for a couple of days.

Day 29: Player 1 continues to play DayZ, is fully tooled up with stuff, ready to take on the world.

End of the month [Day 30]: Everyone loses their progress and the DayZ player base drops 50% because of the bullshit reset put in place by the new Dev, VanillaDragon.

i dont mean in the end product either' date=' just in the short term to remove the incentives to exploiting[/quote']

So you want to apply diarhea tablets to stop cancer? Is that what your master plan entails?

i dont see why everyone is so against it' date=' who lives for longer than a month? it hurts you for one life and it will help curb farming/duping which affect everyone. how is it different to dying? [/quote']

You're not thinking this through at all! It won't be players who last longer than 30 days who'll be affected, it'll be EVERYONE who plays for any long period of time, 3 days, 10 days or 21 days, they'll all get reset at the same time.

why bother if everything will be reset when you die?

Because when you die' date=' its either through an action that the player or another player performs in game, not a faceless computer just deleting everyones data and wasting any hardwork players have taken.

having a full reset once a month would remove any incentive to mass farm/ mass dupe gear. the down side is everyone loses all their gear once a month.

Having a forced reset would remove any incentive to play, it wouldn't stop hackers because they still get to exploit and that, they just have to restart the process after 30 days.

and how is this any different to dying? who here lives for more than a month? not a single person i would wager.

the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

The benefits outweigh the disadvantages from YOUR perspective because you're too busy getting mad at cheaters than you are playing the game and having fun. It doesn't matter if a player lives over a month' date=' the reset would take place no matter how long the player has lived.

think of it this way: you get killed once a month on a predetermined date and you no longer have to worry about being killed by duped dmrs and nvg

How do you even know these things are duped? I'd rather have a legit death than to have any progress taken away from me by a force that has nothing to do with the game itself. And you'll still get killed by those people before day 30 even happens.

i am sorry you would be the 1% (im guessing) of people this would affect in a bad way' date=' but we know what spok says.[/quote']

Try 80%. Not everyone gets killed straight away because they try to COD it and get bean'd on the coast.

thanks for more ad hom attacks on me with no real substance. i feel sorry for anyone who lacks the intelligence to form a coherent argument and just insults me. true pity.

I don't think you know what Ad Hom means' date=' because that poster wasn't saying it specifically to or about you, just saying that even with your amazing plan in place, you'd still get killed the same way anyway.

Also no one wants your pity, they want you to stop whining and just play the damn game.

its more about removing the incentive to farm/hack

IT DOESN'T.

AT ALL.

It just gives farmers and hackers a time limit, in which they'll just start the process over.

everyone here acts as if they stay alive for months at a time?? i must be a noob considering my average life is about 7 days. can you guys show me how to survive months at a time?

Your method doesn't USE in game days' date=' it uses actual days, which are an entirely seperate thing. These players probably have a character that only has 10 or so in game days on it, but those days could have been accumlated over a month or so in real life.

am a good player, i often survive for more than a week and i have high end gear with in a few days... all of which is irrelevant to my point.

So if you can get high end gear within a few days, whats stopping the farmers and hackers just getting that gear back and being able to use it for 26 days, completely voiding the point of your proposed system.

its a major problem that can be fixed with very little effort and cost on the part of the community. one death a month to reduce the incentive to dupe/farm? sounds reasonable to me. you even know what its coming and everyone shares the same fate.

It doesn't fix it' date=' and you have no idea how much effort or cost it takes.

PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO DUPE. They won't just stop because there is a system in place that resets it after a long period of time.

exactly. the average life expectancy is 31 minutes. a reset once a month is going to be an inconvenience? to the 4 people who live that long?

That average isn't correct because of people who respawn whenever they get a shitty spawn and want to be in Prigordy or Kamenka.

why bother discussing game mechanics' date=' exchanging ideas and possible changes in an alpha... are you seriously asking me that?

god some people i swear.[/quote']

1) Because this isn't in the suggestions forum

2) It has been discussed, and EVERYONE thinks it is a stupid idea

3) You come across as an arrogant douchebag, so noone wants to put up with you and your whining.

God, This person.

TL;DR: Basically, you gave a terrible idea and no one agreed with it, and I got so annoyed by how stupid you were I went through every post you made to point out how silly you and your idea are. This is why I hardly post on forums these days.

What about those players that can only play a few hours a week? All there progress wiped every month?! So pointless' date=' stupid idea!

[/quote']

i would say go back to playing angry birds on your mobile and leave real games to gamers, not part time casuals

lol those tears.

And it wasn't even announced' date=' but simply a proposition of one dude.

[/quote']

tell me about, i didnt even pose it as a statement, i asked a question. i dont get the reactions

Hmm its probably a consequent reaction from people who believe to get ultimate happiness by simply accumulating lots of stuff and holding on to it, instead of enjoying the experience itself. Probably because its a big thing of the current Zeitgeist.

It reflects to some degree why everyone seems to play the game in super-angsty mode, after bandit-skin removal, grinding masses of useless inventory stuff instead of enjoying the thrill of guessing motives of other players and taking some risks.

The game is quite a casual thing for roleplayers and atmosphere enthusiasts anyway, no matter what kind of skill or archievement some people like to dream about. It couldnt be much further from a solid competition based esports title that rewards actual training, skill and reflexes, so I feel a bit sad for so many people actually seeking archievement in this virtual wonderland.

But whatever, to each his own. Its a bit shitty that such a great number of players with this agenda ruined the psychologically interesting part that made DayZ a completely new gaming experience. So now its deathmatch with item accumulation. And obviously people seem to think they're somehow hardcore for playing a permadeath game (in which they dodge permadeath with tents).

Why in the world would you like that 1 death a month, would stop people from farming? I can go to NW and NE airports. Most of the northern towns. The military base, all in about 6 hours (with my group) I then have 29 days 18 hours to kill all I want and do whatever i want.

Im sure there will be eventually.... The point behind no resets at the moment is this is a 100% no rules game. If I see your shit.... I can take it. If you see me taking it.... you can kill me and take my shit. Move your Shit. Re-Hide it. If someone has the time to amass that much shit.... all power to them. If someone Hacks and gets shit free.... all power to them. Some people use Cheats in Games..... Thats pussy, Hacker = Pussy gamer, They wanna ruin the game for themselves so be it. Don't try and ruin the game for everyone else because..... ohhh Idk, someone shot you or camped you or.... Who knows. Thats whats wrong in the world we live in "Fair" its not fair. No child left behind. Lets reward EVERYONE even the dumb fucks! Customer Service "Customer is ALWAYS right" Naw.... this is.... what I guess i'd have to call a 'real world' game.... Gotta be dirty and think smart. Quick on the walk quiet on the talk A.K.A. Don't ask if friendly in zelen if you hear gunshots..... Just start Moving. Use your brain, Check treelines, check Overlooks, Check Fences Doors windows. Don't just trust people. No one. As for hacks...... like I said, Cheats. No one likes a cheater in any game, scum of the scum in my opinion and should you find some large tent city you can pretend YOU are a reset and Destroy EVERYTHING they own.... Should I log on in 5 mins and die..... then respawn and run to my tent to find it gone. Bravo. I failed. I'll grab my balls and say Oh shit im a man..... No biggy Ill do better next time.

i think so' date=' like once a month. it would help keep the game fair for people who dont have a group of 40 guild friends farming barracks and filling tents with loot or dupers.

who would be inconvenienced by a character reset across all servers? mostly the hackers, dupers and farmers. i'm surprised there hasnt been one yet with the influx of players in the last few weeks.

would anyone bother farming and duping if they knew their gear wasnt going to last more than a month?

Lemme guess. Liberal Democrat?

I think my idea would combat server-hopping much better, and not punish those that don't.

Everyone has a 'primary' server, the one that they last logged into and out of. You spawn in that same spot when going back to your primary server, but when you switch servers, you are spawned randomly (not in a town or near another player). That way people can pick up where they left off on their primary server, and also switch servers if they want but not be able to spawn in 20 NW Airfields in 20 minutes. Small inconvenience to people switching servers once in a while, but completely solves the server-hopping problem. No more farming, no more popping up behind people during a firefight. And best of all, this will not punish anyone NEARLY as bad as a monthly game-wide reset.

I actually wasnt going to point out how stupid of an idea this is originally, when thread only had 3 pages in it. But the OP is really persistent....

Seriously, OP, think about it... And you shall see why everyone is against it.

What are the main concerns you are trying to address?

1. Someone consistently having better gear than you do.

2. Everyone needs to be on same level playing wise

3. Inconvenience the hackers/dupers

4. Make sure that noone has gear saved in tents/cars for long periods of time

Lets have adult discussion, without name calling:

1. Log in to a dusk/dawn/night server, move to North side of the map, Berezino, NEAF, Stary, NWAF and get yourself some nice loot. Congratulations, now you have the same gear as the people you are talking about have.

2. It's a bit along the lines of Marx/Engels/Lenin/Mao type of thinking, but lets entertain this idea nevertheless. So lets make DayZ into communist environment. If you have, same thing as everyone else, arent you at this point begining to promote mindless deathmatch? The moment reset hits, everyone rushes over to the main hubs where items are (listed in #1), and once they're loaded, they will prevent you from getting there, same way they do it now. At the same time, what is the point of you 'farming' items, if you already have everything? The point of the game right now, is to survive. So I search for items enough for me to survive (i gave up on NVG), and after i got the bare minimum (some navigational equipment like a compass, map is a plus) i just roam around looking for vehicles and trouble.

3. Just like real life, the only people you will inconvenience by introducing gun laws, or such resets, are the honest players. Hackers/Dupers will have their items the moment they want them, and it is us, the regular players who will be upset at being reset back constantly.

4. What is wrong with having tents as is? It's logical, if anything i want the ability to place tents in forests. My group of friends have multiple tents setup across the map. I have mine near the coast, so when any of my friends, or i die, we have a nearby location to grab bare minimum items to go north easier. Tents are there for a reason, and there is absolutely no point of reseting them

Last point... This is alpha... You can have database issue that will reset you as is at any given point of time, no need to time it.

Tents are bullshit.

The exciting thing is what you experience on your journey, not what virtual inventory items you manage to accumulate. Stuff sitting in tents is not adding to gameplay whatsoever, its just some ones and zeros which remove permadeath for people who'd rather just grind and collect then plan and execute interesting stuff.

IMO tents should go completely and you shouldn't be able to loot your own body after you respawn. Otherwise the term permadeath is simply false labelling.

Maybe the OP needs pointers on how to gear up.

1. Move inland, away from the coast.

2. Target the smaller towns on the map and proceed there.

3. Crawl through town, enter buildings, gather loot.

4. As your playing ability hones itself, proceed to slightly larger towns.

5. Crawl about, loot, etc.

6. Return to the forest and be sure to travel unseen. Pause periodically to look around and watch for movement.

Voila, you should now have a fully outfitted character with loads of good gear and probably all of your ancillary survival items. (map, compass, matches, watch, hatchet, hunting knife, etc.)

You no longer need to worry about who has what, and let's face it: your survivalist, loner lifestyle makes me far more dangerous than the guy who drives down the street honking his horn.

Regular character resets during alpha testing?

Why not. My character has bugged out so often now, loosing items, always spawning in some desert area to the west of the map, spawning in water etc. I think it wouldn't hurt much to bring every character on the same level for every new major release. This might make testing the alpha more consistent. (Maybe this is being done other wise, in that case its not necessary ofc).

Regular character reset at different major milestones during beta?

Maybe once or twice at the most; if deemed necessary by the dev team.

Regular character reset when "its done"?

Nope. The only real character reset shall be death (or a DB problem)
