Are they denying everyone?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the DayZ community, only been playing for a few weeks. I love the game, I have a server and plenty of bandwidth (specs to follow) and I want to help the community by running a server. I've been a Systems Administrator for 15 years (Solaris, Linux, Windows, Mac) and have been around computers since 1979. I know how to setup and config servers. I was denied my instance ID and I can't figure out why. The first email I received said "we don't allow home servers".. ok, I understand that, but I never said my server was at home, I have no idea what hat they pulled that response out from, maybe it is their standard reply? I contested the email and asked them to reconsider and I got back a one line email that said "As I already stated, we will not approve your request". Is anyone else haveing trouble getting an ID? I have been reading the forums and I have a much better hardware spec and internet connection that a lot of the specs I have been seeing.. I am really confused over this. Part of me feels like they are trying to force people to *pay* for a server from someone else.. I'm sorry but I am not paying for a service I can provide myself for free. Anyway, here are my specs... I'm just wondering if anyone else is also having trouble getting approved.

Intel i7-2600 3.4GHz

8gb Ram

Wiondows 7 (I can install any version of Windows they require)

1tb of Sata Hard Disk space

I applied for a 100 count server, maybe my machine can't handle that, ok, I will take 50 slots... heh

My connections to the internet:

1 Gb/s to Level 3 Communications

1 Gb/s to Sprint

1 Gb/s to Cogent Communications

1 Gb/s to Northern Crossroads

OC-3 to Comcast

The entire internal backbone is 10 Gigabit Ethernet with Gigabit connections to each computer on the network.

Someone, please tell me what is wrong here. :-)

I imagine only approved RSP's would be accepted. You can always run a Lingor server.

Yeah, if I were you. I would run a private hive with that setup. Create a Hack-Free Community...Hell I have a server and I would join your community.

They stated that they do not allow Windows 7. Try installing Windows Server 2008. If you still don' get an instance ID I would suggest you to host a private server.

Inu, I understand that, most home machines wouldn't have the processing power or internet bandwidth.. If you read my internet specs, no one has those kinds of connections "at home".. I wish I did!! The server is located in the datacenter where I work.

And Domi, yeah I can install any version of Windows they require, that's not a problem at all.

Then I would try again with Windows Server.

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things is just not the same!

To be less subtle, though, you tipped your hand that you are an inexperienced server admin by proclaiming Win7 as your OS of choice.

I'm still trying to reconcile your claim of well experienced admin and choice of Win7 myself :P I don't understand, good sir!

But yes, they made a thread explicitly itemizing what criteria will guarantee denial of instance ID. One such thing was an OS other than Windows Server. You may have a hard time convincing them now, though, since they'll simply match your email and/or requested server IP to your previous denied request and think you're just adjusting your submission to placate them and get an ID.

I find it funny that you are leaving out the fact that your application said the server was using a 75/50 connection.

Your server was not approved because 1) it's running Windows 7 and 2) it doesn't meet our 100mbps/100mbps connection speed requirement.

I imagine only approved RSP's would be accepted. You can always run a Lingor server.

Anyone, regardless of host, who meets the requirements gets accepted.

Where did I say it was my OS of choice? That is just what's currently on the machine. I wouldn't use any version of Windows to run a server, ever, but DayZ requires Windows, that's certainly not my fault! I'm a Unix person myself, more specifically Solaris and Linux.

You can use Linux in combination with Wine too, if you prefer that.

It runs pretty well from what I have seen.

And I find it funny that you left out that on my second ticket I mentioned to you that I used some "speed test" site that was clearly unreliable, I then contacted the senior network admin to get the exact details of our connections to the internet and I gave you a list of my internet connections to the outside world (same list as above) and you just replied "we are not going to approve". I also mentioned I would change to whatever OS was required. Instead of giving me a one line email saying "no", you could have at least mentioned to me what to do to fix my request for an ID.

So please, answer me this, now that I have told you twice that my internet connections are good and I put Windows 2008 on my box, will you approve me? I really don't want to waste my time wiping and reinstalling the OS if you are just going to say no.

Yeah, I'm not really into using programs like Wine or VMware.. I prefer to use whatever OS is needed. Emulation is usually a lot slower. Plus where I work I have access to most OS versions anyway.

So, as a system admin or whatever you are, you didn't know the network's speed? So you provided the speed from from an online speed test?

Also, are you 100% positive that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is allowing you to host a DayZ server on their network? Seems fishy to me.

Sys Admin, I'm not the Network Admin. As I've been working there for 13 years I can run whatever server I want in my department, nothing fishy going on, I assure you. A quote from the senior network admin "I don't care what people run on their servers as long as no one on the outside world complains". In a nutshell, the only thing that is frowned upon are file sharing services, torrents and such.

And, there is no need to be rude, first you flame me for leaving out information (but then you left out information) and now the "whatever you are" comment. Come on man, there is no need to be like that. I'm new to the community and I'm just trying to help out here.

edit: As far as me not knowing the network speeds, I am only responsible for my subnet, the 18.62 range. I don't deal with the actual connections to the world.

So MIT IST will confirm that you are permitted to do this?

I don't work in the MIT IS&T department, I work in the MTL IS&T department, my department along with two others make up the 18.62 subnet. I don't know what MIT IS&T would say, I only no what the network admin for my subnet would say. I know MIT doesn't allow people to run stuff that you are charging for.. meaning I can't setup a server farm and rent out servers to people, that's not allowed for sure, but I am not doing that.. heh So to answer you question, I really have no idea what the main IS&T department would say. I can certainly ask them when I get into work tomorrow.

edit: With all the college students running all kinds of stuff... I'm willing to bet they have the same attitude as my subnet admin, probably as long as it's not illegal it's not a problem... but I'll ask them.

I do have to agree with the OP on how unprofessional it is to be so rude to someone trying to contribute to DayZ by hosting a server.

And I have to refute your stance and say how unprofessional it is for the OP to flip the bird at DayZ's volunteer support by not taking the time to research what it takes to run a DayZ server (and your own damn network) before filing an instance ID request.

The OP can't be bothered to search the forums for answers. Everything urbanfox has stated has already been covered on the forums.

http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/79593-information-on-server-requests-082312/

http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/55657-start-here-a-beginners-guide-to-dayz-servers-and-administration/

Read that first link to understand the DayZ volunteers' point of view and how a smug sysadmin who wants to setup a server who can't be "inconvenienced" to set things up right and submit a proper instance request is just a colossal waste of the volunteer's time. Time that could be spent addressing legitimate inquiries.

Alright, this isn't my place to argue. I wasn't going to post anything further until you came in and got all "White Knight" about the smug OP, TheDesigner. I'm done now, though. I just hate seeing people gang up on the DayZ volunteers for not being at their beck and call. "But, I'm willing to contribute a server to the cause! Kiss my feet!". Bullshit.

Thank you. It's also very unprofessional to post the name of my employer in a public forum.. but it is what it is I guess. I am still amazed at the difficulty of this process. I can understand having standards, but now questioning if my employer will approve? Like it's any of their business.. Let me handle any backlash.. if there was any.. heh

I'm not being smug and where did I say the DayZ admin needed to be at my beck and call? I'm sorry if I missed something on the forums.. jeez the world is ending because of it. Ya know what, screw the DayZ community, I tried to help out but I guess it's not needed or wanted.. fine. I won't bother to pursue this any longer.

edit: Actually I did read that second link, that's the one I have been using. The first link I missed, well. Sorry.

Well, here's the deal.

You should have read the stickies, but you didn't. If you would have read the stickies, you would have known why you didn't get approved (and maybe not even have applied at all).

But, you didn't. Let me spell it out for you. Your server didn't get approved primarily because 1) we don't support Windows 7 (which is no big deal as Server could have been loaded) and 2) your connection doesn't meet our requirements. Number 2 is a big deal. We require all servers to be hosted on a 100mbps/100mbps conneciton. I don't really care what your backbone is when the connection to your server doesn't meet our requirements.

So, no, you aren't going to be approved on that IP. Because I am dick? No, because it wouldn't be fair to bend the rules for you while others get denied. The rules get applied fairly to everyone.

Oh, and yeah, the thing about it being on MIT's network...

I do not believe that this is a logical statement. I know many System Administrators, and if you did as you are stating work in this field for 13 Years, you should have some understanding of basic Networking.

"I don't care what people run on their servers as long as no one on the outside world complains"

Complete non-sense.

I believe that your approach to this entire situation was wrong, and you simply through your statements made a fool of yourself. When you could have potentially resolved this matter in a much different manner.

Typical "Community Support". I don't think I've ever seen a post where they are not patronising the community.

Anyway, the hive is over-rated and buggy as all hell. Private hives are the future of this game, so I suggest you set up your own hive.

DayZ staff just don't know how to run things with this many servers and players.
