I thought it would be neat if you could use a spade to dig a random hole in the ground somewhere to store your goods. Much more secure than tents.

Not possible in the current mod version of Day Z I don't think. It may be implemented in standalone, personally I'm against something like this as it makes it even easier for someone to die and then just run to their buried treasure and get fully geared up again.
