I'm curious about whether the majority of players like having NVGs in game. They're obviously one of the most desirable pieces of high end gear, but they are a complete game-changer at night.

I love the tension of playing at night time, always having to balance the usefulness of light with the risk of detection. Whether I'm weaving through zombies I can barely see in the glow of a chemlight, or being shot by a sneakier player who managed to outmaneuver me in the dark, I'm enjoying myself. But NVGs throw that balance. Other players' attempts at stealth become comically obvious, and you can shoot anyone you please while operating in perfect darkness. If someone wearing NVGs does reveal themselves you can try and blind them with flares, but honestly how often does that happen?

So what do people think? Do you want your own NVGs, or do you enjoy fumbling around in the darkness? Personally I'd like to see them either removed or changed to something more like Stalker's low quality night vision (if that's possible).

Could probably be countered by throwing out lots of flares along your intended path and hiding somwhere.

But yes, all they need to do is headshot you and you wont even know what happened...someone with NVG and a silenced weapon could probably do whatever he/she wanted at night

I've got NVG's now but I took them off of a guy I killed. It's all about out manouvering them and keeping hard cover between you adn them staying low that kind of thing. Don't forget if you're in an area infested with dead alot of the time the guy with NVG's probably won't open fire as he's going to draw the attention of alot of not-so-dead!

Also You'll tend to find that alot of players with NVG's have been playing a while adn the more experianced players will tend not to shoot people on site. This isn't true 100% of the time of course....

Drop a flare at his feet and hear him scream as he is blinded in RL by his monitor :)

I am the only one in my group with NVGs, when it's dark I scout ahead or scope out the area for zombies or other players. We've been playing for a few days now and are quite experienced therefore we know that meeting another player is more trouble than it's worth; if we can avoid one we will.

And flares are the wost thing ever for someone with night vision. The radius of light is drastically greater than normal and you can't see anything. NVGs have their strengths and weaknesses, they are balanced but are still a great find for players.

Would turning down the exposure on your NVG combat flares? (pgUp, pgDown)

Might be an ACE thing? I dunno I havent played vanilla Arma in a long time.

But when NV turned on, I would just adjust exposure by pressing page Up, or page Down

Yeah, that's an ACE feature.

I know not everyone with NVGs sets out to find and murder other players, but the fact is it makes it very easy for those that do. Sure, if I know there's a player with NVGs around I can light up the area with flares, but how would I know that? I just feel like it takes the fun out of playing at night.

Not everyone has NVGs, they're super rare. The likelihood that you would run into anyone at night is highly unlikely, and extremely unlikely that they would have NVGs. I doubt anyone with NVGs would even bother killing random people, unless they have something that's really worth the trouble of taking.

NVGs make dealing with evasion a lot easier but once the gunfire starts you might as well be using flares as zombies see you no matter what. On the PvP side you might as well complain about scoped weapons too because they have little to no use outside of killing players at range.

You are right though most of the players with NVG will use them to avoid other players as that can easily lead to bad things. You can avoid things easier with NVG but as mentioned flares/chemlights and especially flashlights blind NVG users. Who is to say that without NVGs the very same PvPer wouldn't just stalk your light source and kill you just the same?

As more and more players salvage NVGs you will likely notice less and less action along the coastline as the real goodies are hidden inland. So by this line of thought the new players will only have to worry about the odd greifing PvPer out for free kills and trolling, because those who have brains will be onto bigger better things then killing for a few bandages and painkillers.

I have NVGs, and I think they should be removed. Partially because it can give such a large advantage to anyone that has them, and also because I think it doesn't fit with the theme of "civilian" zombie survival. Also because it makes having a primary with a flashlight that much more badass :P

Honestly I think there should be as little high tech military equipment as possible, or it should be hobbled in such a way as to make it less desirable (such as NVGs needing batteries.)

NVGs are already very rare, so I doubt they need to be even more so. Also consider that they're really only useful at night, the screen is completely green, and your view is chopped by about 20-30%. The most viable option, as you suggested, would be the batteries (though I've yet to find any batteries at all).

It doesn't fit with civilian zombie survival? By that logic everything except the occasional AK should be taken out. Why would an ex-soviet nation have m249's and 240B's? I think they should remain in the game, and I hope if I run into someone with them my flares and smoke will save me.

I have nvg's and I feel like a God during night time, and then I had a huey as well which made me better than a god. Now I have lost both...

I would like to see night vision scopes or binoculars rather than goggles, balances it out a bit nicer.

Have you played the original ArmA 2 campaign? The US were involved in a war in Chernarus, so chances are there were still US Soldiers around when the outbreak started.

make NVGs run on hard-to-obtain batteries, thus forcing conservation of when they are used. problem solved.
