You just have to search for the position, where you actually get the context menu for "Gear" and "Take Raw Meat".Sometimes I have to search for this for 1 or 2 minutes. I agree that occasionally it may be difficult to get the gear menu to appear on account of grass or other things getting in the way but in my, and most probably the op's situation was not the case. I would argue most probably server desync but since it hasn't happens since then I don't know. You don't have to be patient, nor wait.
