People can only talk with in close range of you through direct chat, or when in a vehicle with another player vehicle chat.

The typing key is "?" I think

And to speak on the Mic use Capslock

You can only talk to those in close proximity to you, which is about 40 meters. You can talk in-game by using the comma and period buttons to move through the different communication types. You'll want to be using "Direct comms"

Generally no one talks or writes because that means they give away the fact that someone's nearby. If you'd stalk through Cherno and suddenly hear 2 people talking, you'd feel the adrenaline pounding, and they have lost the element of surprise. Most teamed players are talking in 3rd party communication software such as skype, steam voicechat, teamspeak, ventrilo, etc... as to still be able to talk to their playmates and not alert anyone nearby in the game that someone's nearby with a group of players.

If you do however play alone, the ingame voice-chat/regular chat can offer you life instead of death somethimes. Just switch it to Direct Channel by using the ; or : key and doubleclick left Caps Lock (or hold or just modify what button suits you best in the Settings). Whenever you see a survivor, you can talk using your mic or type with your keyboard to let him know you're there, because 99.999999% of the time, if they see you and no words have been exchanged, they will shoot you and so should you if the player does not respond (it could save your life). Be carefull though, as a 3rd player around may be able to hear/read your chatting and try and find u guys, kill you and steal your loot.

Personally i prefer the stalk version, as i keep silenct 9/10 times and let him do his business and leave, if he has a bandit rag i pop his skull in.
