make the crossbow 1 hit kill again for zombies

Recommended Posts

I don't know what happened, but since the last patch there's no reason anymore to use the crossbow. Where you could kill a zombie with one arrow the the chest before, it will take 2 or 3 now. I tried several times, and it appeared there's nearly no chance to one-hit kill with it against zombies anymore.

Together with the random disappearing of arrows, slot space for arrows, the offset ironsight, the low reload speed and the delay between reloading and actually being able to fire it etc, it takes away the only reason one would actually use the crossbow anymore.

You could cope with the offset with some practice, try to sneak up on zeds and shoot them in the chest up close to get the kill, but without the one hit kill on arrows this weapon became useless in every way.

So please, consider making it a one hit kill weapon again. Thanks.

Listen to the podcast (on the news page) an update coming up is completely reworking the crossbow. Just wait guys <3

That is great to hear.

I am not opposed to having only headshots be one-hit-kills, but for that to be feasible, the crossbow needs improvements. I am hoping the incoming update is successful.

I have to disagree with this. My current life has lasted for about 8 days now, and for 7 of them I have been using the crossbow, and I still have the makarov. The crossbow is one shot kill if you hit the head, and that is brilliant considering it is a completely silent weapon. It's not meant for combat, it's meant for dealing with that one alert zombie who followed you into the barn, or that one zombie sitting outside the door. It requires skill to use it effectively and that should not be changed. Challenge is good.

There is only one change that the crossbow needs: Being able to pick up the bolts by standing near them, not looking at them. When a zombie falls face down it becomes almost impossible to retrieve the bolt, and if you fuck up a few times then you run out of bolts when in reality you could just move the body and pull it out.

Other than that, proper iron sights would be nice. If iron sights arn't added, the model should atleast be moved so the bolt lines up with where it hits because at the moment it fires waaaaaay above. That said, taking 2 minutes to practice against an unaware zombie (Or even a tree) makes it easy to begin getting headshots. Crossbow is not for combat, it's for stealth. A completely silent weapon with infinate ammo, you use it for sneaking in and out of towns, so for that reason you use it in close range. A tip: Use the 'iron sights' but aim the crossbow's bolt at the zombie's upper chest, then you will hit it's head.

So basically: No one shot kill apart from head shots, please.

I agree with Chickenfeed. I love the crossbow, and I do believe it needs some work, but one shot kills is too much.

One hit kill or not, is not really an issue for me, but:

a.) I'd like to have proper sights, maybe even an acog, or something.

b.) 1 bolt per slot is a huge handicap, give me a quiver/clip that holds 5 bolts and i'm happy fellow.

c.) Retrieving bolts takes to much time, it's to hard to find it on the body.

Could be added to inventory on the body and retrieved this way.

Either you have been very lucky, or you didn't try the crossbow in the 1.6.0.1 patch. I have shot and killed more zombies with headshots with the crossbow than I care to remember. It's not because I didn't state the number of days I have been carrying this thing around that I should be considered to be just some noob that doesn't know the actual ironsight is exactly 1 cm above the viewed one on the screen I'm using. The first thing I did when shooting this thing is try it out on a wall, at several distances and in several stances. Why do you think I got good at killing with it in the first place?

Anyway. Getting a headshot with this thing is not as easy as you make it sound. Even hitting the torso will not work in some cases, even from very close range and aiming down sight (which i always do btw). I can't recall how many arrows I have pulled from zombie arms after lining up a perfect headshot from 5 meters away.

Get ingame and try it, you'll see that I do have a point here.

I know the crossbow is for stealth, I mainly use it to make an easier path towards lootable houses or when a zed is too close to me to be comfortable. I don't hunt other players, I don't find this to fit my personality.

"7 days" does, infact, include yesterday. So yes, I have played with it on 1.6.0.1. Perhaps you are trying to fire from too far away? The best way to use it is when prone and close to a zombie. I've hit alert zombies running at me or running towards a friendly, I've hit monkeys and walkers, both alert and passive. Sometimes the bolt hits their neck and I have to take a second shot, but most of the time I get the one shot kill. But yeah, the bolts arn't always 100% accurate. I guess it comes down to server connection, I always have very low ping and get the headshots, maybe that has something to do with it?

EDIT: I didn't say you were a noob, I didn't even imply that. When I said I have been using it for 7 days that was to show my opinion can be backed up and I'm not talking out my arse.

Well as I was playing with chickenfeed this time yesterday, on the 1.6.0.1 patch, and watched him kill 5 zombies around a deer stand with headshots, not to mention saving my ass multiple times when an alert zombie stumbled across us. Perhaps getting a headshot is as easy as chicken makes out, and you are just not as good as you think you are.

well, the same counts for me. I've been using the crossbow out of love for the stealth kill I have to make here and there to get safely across a town without making noise since I play mostly alone. When I started playing it was actually the first weapon I came across and I fell in love with it even with the wrong ironsights.

As I said, I take my shots mostly from 5 meters away because even before the patch it could be a bit tricky, I had to reshoot them only from time to time. However, now I don't seem to be hitting anything in alot of the cases that used to prove succesful. Yesterday I even shot two bolts straight at the heart of a zed that was walking towards me, so full frontal, and I pulled two bolts from his ARM, even though I shot him from only 5-6 meters away.

If you re-read my posts you'll see that I sneak up on them and get a very close range aimed down the sight shot, which would effectively take them down until the 1.6.0.1 patch happened. Now I feel there's no more reason to use the bow anymore and that makes me a sad panda.

I have shot zombies with headshots that came running towards me after being alerted pre-patch. I've also been a esports clan player in BF and COD games so I do think I can aim quite a bit. I understand you wish to defend your friend but don't make assumptions so fast. I WAS able to kill with headshots effectively pre-patch, suddenly I don't get any kills with the thing anymore post patch? Something is just off and I wish they would fix it.

In that case the only reason I can think of is server lag or desync. Even on 1.6.0.1 the majority of my shots are still headshots. What ping do you usually play with? I rarely have higher than 50, and as the bolts are not designed as 'bullets' maybe it's as simple as that.

it depends, I try to get on low ping servers. Lag or desync might be the issue, interesting theory. I'll try it out tonight if I find a bow and repost :)

I apologize, perhaps I did jump to assumptions and if you could consistently get headshots pre-patch it is likely something else is the cause. I was just trying to vouch that headshots, and thus 1 hit kills on zombies, are still possible post patch.

The crossbow is awesome as it is. The fact it doesn't aggro zombies even after you have shot them makes it a very powerful tool, especially in groups.

Maybe bolts do take up too much space, but I like the scarcity of bolts overall.

100% you need to somehow make the bolts appear in the inventory of the deceased. It totally sucks when a zombie falls over the wrong way and you lose your bolt, not to mention it's unrealistic as you could just roll the body over.

An alternative to bolts in the inventory is simply adding the "Take Steel Bolt" action if you are standing withing 1m of the bolt, so you dont need to find that sweet spot where you are aiming at the bolt and not the corpse.

indeed, I have noticed that. However it doesn't always work. I sometimes end up going back and forth towards the zombie until I get the message on screen again lol.

So I finally found a survivor to test the crossbow on. Took four torso shots to kill him. Fortunately for me he had no idea what he was doing when I caught him off guard in the church. He shot me once then started throwing flares at me.

To people saying crossbow is awesome as it is... Not sure if srs. Compare it to a silenced m9 and tell me it is balanced as it is.

I see the crossbow as a PVE weapon. Yes it's useless against players, but for dealing with crowds of zombies efficiently it is much better. Also it is much more common than the m9. I've not used an m9 - is it as silent as the crossbow?

I'll agree that the crossbow could use some love.

Especially for the skill it takes to land a shot with it using those iron sights, there needs to be an easier means of reacquiring bolts and possibly better damage. Granted, most bolts wouldn't be retrievable if they were shot into a concrete wall from a few feet away.
