An idea about friend finding in standalone/mod

I was thinking about how we could find our friends in DayZ without simply spawning together and ruining the game experience.

What about a CB type radio that can be looted and is common. You and your friend(s) could tune to the same channel and a vague directional indicator would pop up. The closer you get, the more narrow the indicator becomes and acts as a subtle version of "I'm approaching a radio tower near a tree line" "Yeah, I can see that from the distance, we must be getting closer!"

A CB mechanic could also be used in other ways, like having pre-set channels for emergency broadcast and others for survivors to find each other. Think side chat, but more realistic as you would have to be actively scanning channels and you would need to be within a signal radius.

Thoughts?

Well radios are already in the game so I assume they will have some useful function at some point, I don't really get your first idea though, most friends would be using some external VoIP regardless so I can't see it being of much benefit.

I like the idea of being able to communicate with anyone in-game with a radio if you control say, a radio tower.

I had an idea for this aswell but it was a lot different.

basically in the standalone make it so that there are spawn points all over the map and not just on the coast. Then add in a group function. Group with your friends and whenever someone in the group dies, they are allowed to select someones name in the group and they spawn in the spawn point closest to that person.

This would allow people to group better without giving an advantage as you can not spawn close to them without dieing, plus your not spawning on them, just one of the map spawn points. IDK, something like that would be cool IMO.

I don't really get your first idea though, most friends would be using some external VoIP regardless so I can't see it being of much benefit.

Sorry, I did a bad job of explaining it. What I meant was that if friends both have a radio and are both on the same frequency, an indicator would show the general direction of the other person. If me and you were both lost and had a radio, we would be communicating landmarks to each other so we both have a vague idea of where we are. That would be the principal of having an indicator on the screen.

Having just a waypoint marker on the screen and not having a gps/compass/map takes out the immersion of the game IMO. That was my justification of having the whole friend radio indicator mechanic.

Rocket has talked about being able to spawn together with friends as a group, not sure on the details, I think it was in the recent machinima interview

I understand that it sucks when you get spawned on the other side of the map, far away from friends. Instead of a spawn choosing point, I would like to see a way to mark people as friends. Then when you respawn, It will try to choose a location close to them automatically. Giving people the ability to choose a spawn location will take a lot away from the game IMO.

But I didn't say anything about choosing spawn location, your second point was what I said. Say you have 4 others in your group but they arent all together, you pick one of them and it spawns you in a spawn point closest to them. It's not choosing a spawn point but also letting you group with a friend easier. If there is only 2 people in the group(you and one other) then you just spawn in a random point near them.

I should stop replying to the DayZ forum while i'm reading Reddit :) Others have suggested picking spawn points. I was just stating that I'm against it. Rocket keeps bringing up the disorienting mechanic on spawn. I like your idea, but if it's implemented, I would also like to see the removal of your initial spawn location at the bottom right after login. Keep people on their toes ;)

Just... No. Imangine: you kill a sniper at one of those points. Sniper spawns in behind you, grabs your gun out of your backpack.
