Gulrix 2 Posted August 16, 2012 I would like to propose a scenario then discuss something.Earlier today i was looting around the southwest airfield after me and my friend died. I found some pretty good loot, specifically two primaries and two secondaries that me and my friend were in need of. I took the secondaries, one on me and one in my patrol pack and the akm. I left the m1014 on the ground and was going to camp out there till my friend ran over and we could gear up. About half an hour later later i hear an AK variant go off around the hangers and see someone light up in the killfeed. I wait patiently at the top of the tower, outside looking in through the glass onto the stairs i know he is about to climb. He climbs the stairs. I KoS, take his alice pack, throw the weapons and some food in there and leave.Normally i don't KoS and I hate people that do. But to my understanding this guy just killed a player and had an AK. I also saw his alice pack and needed that. Normally i would just take him hostage and ask if he needs help or if we could do some trading, but under the circumstances was i wrong to KoS?Now onto the discussion. When should you KoS?My opinion on this has always been KoS if--They are a bandit-They are a sniper-They have something you desperately need and won't help you-You view them kill another player but their skin doesn't changeI'm interested to hear all of your thoughts on both points and how you would handle certain situations in which you could KoS and should or where you could KoS and shouldn't. Thank you.

sp86 508 Posted August 16, 2012 If I say hello and they take cover. I see you. I have a grenade launcher. Say hi back or run away, don't be a dick.
amaROenuZ 144 Posted August 16, 2012 What if they say hello back -and- take cover? I know I prefer to avoid leaving my rear hanging out regardless of whether you're friendly or not.

Gulrix 2 Posted August 16, 2012 I'm willing to let that slide. You don't say anything you're going for a flight though. I agree on this point. If you don't declare yourself friendly after i've made first contact within 30 seconds or so i'm inclined to kill as well.
Entaro (DayZ) 33 Posted August 16, 2012 How the hell do you take a player hostage? That is purely RP and opens you up to getting killed yourself - there is no mechanic for restraining somebody or disarming them. KOS is your one-stop shop mechanics-wise for banditry in this game currently. Anything else will result in you having to place some amount of trust in the other player to "go along" with you.If you are a roleplayer, then RPIf you are not a roleplayer, then just kill everybody. Huh? I take you hostage by being in cover behind you and say "so-and-so if you move i will shoot you in the head. Are you friendly?"
Nick8478 166 Posted August 16, 2012 Almost always pretty much, unless it's some unarmed new spawn or something. But if I'm up North and you're geared up, I'm not taking the chance of you seeing me first and killing me. I'm going to shoot at you.
Shaimou 49 Posted August 16, 2012 KoS:-The player is a bandit or I see him kill someone innocent-He is wearing a ghillie suit-He is carrying a sniper rifle-He points a gun at me at close range
Afgoo 114 Posted August 16, 2012 It all depends on your in-game personality. I will only KoS if they are wearing a bandit skin.I will kill somebody if they continue to advance towards me when I have directed them not to. I do not consider this killing on sight, though. Professional N00b 347 Posted August 16, 2012 If I think your weapon can kill me before mine can kill you, then it's KoS.If contact is made then I'll generally try to be nice, but that doesn't happen often. I prefer to shoot first and live.
Fraggle (DayZ) 15720 Posted August 16, 2012 I try to avoid KOS but sometimes there's just not enough time to call "friendly!" and establish the other players motives. In that case I shoot first if possible.
SillySil 295 Posted August 16, 2012 When to KoS:-When another player is potential threat.-I need something and there is a chance he has it.-You're bored, you have high-end gear and want to use it on someone.Meaning ALWAYS.Seriously even someone without a gun can pull out something from his backpack or pull out an axe, they can always try to steal things from your backpack if you let them too close. Even if they say they are friendly they can put a bullet in the back of your head the moment you let your guard down. Also there is always something you need, and there is a chance another player has it (except fresh spawns). And there is the issue of having nothing to do once you get all you want. At that point there is nothing challenging to do except PvP.
twinturbonet (DayZ) 294 Posted August 16, 2012 Unfortunately, based on what I've gone through... It's shoot first, ask questions later.
Hutch (DayZ) 116 Posted August 16, 2012 If I see anyone approaching that hasn't already shot at me, I take cover and take aim at them.If they point a weapon in my direction, I shoot. I learned this lesson the hard way.If all they have is a hatchet, and they come within melee range, I shoot. If they are unarmed and they come within range of looting my backpack, I shoot. In other words, if they keep their distance and aren't an immediate threat, I won't KOS.*IMO, the protocol is (or should be)Make voice contact, keep your distance and keep your weapon pointed at the ground or away from me.Any deviation from this protocol will result me attempting to eliminate you as a threat.1.) Make voice contact. I usually don't read the text that scrolls by the bottom of the screen. I'm too busy checking my six and putting you in my sights. Turn your sound on so you can hear me and get a headset with a mic so you can talk back.2.) Keep your distance. If you want to be friendly, fine. You can do it from over there. No reason you have to get close to me.3.) Keep your weapon pointed away. If you have a gun pointed at my head, you're a split second from killing me and probably just waiting for me to point mine away before you shoot if you haven't already. Gulrix 2 Posted August 16, 2012 See a player yell friendly!! Need medical supplies!! Friendly!!! Then pop the mofo in the f'ing head. Loot his body and then move onto the next person. People like this is the exact reason people do KoS in dayz.
Bloodlike 5 Posted August 16, 2012 Since nobody ever tried to be friendly with me and rather shot me on sight I decided to adopt the same code of conduct. Unless you're weaponless or too far away and not having anything I want I'll leave you alone.

fortran 246 Posted August 16, 2012 No need to KoS when the integrity of the average DayZ player is so low at the moment, firing a warning shot over their head unusually suffices, instant ALT-F4...no more threat. Then again I never venture further south than Zelenogorsk.

puppetworx 474 Posted August 16, 2012 IfThey shoot at meThey're wearing a bandit skinI see them shooting at a non-banditThen I will shoot at them, but not always. Sometimes I'll just evade them if they're more numerous then me or have a large strategic advantage.
Leitbild 8 Posted August 16, 2012 Allways. My trust in the player base has been lost. Got backstabbed to often.
