How far out can you place a tent?

Could you place one off the map? I'm to that point were I prefer to steal from tents rather than looting random cities and airfields. I usually wander the west from lopatino, but I don't know if you place tents beyond the map.

i have set many tents out of map border and most of them save the loot, probably some other problem that's not related to location
