[Suggestion]Not enough realism (yet again)

Recommended Posts

Ok, i was reading through a few threads and made some thoughts what would be some good improvements to make DayZ more realistic. Actually it is more a mess and far from being anything near of realism.

It's not about PvP, although i dislike the actual situation, it is part of the experience, fair enough. IMHO the players do not have enough reasons to care for teamplay or at least not in the same amount as it would in real.

Loot:

That is actually the biggest problem. You go into a barn, take some loot and play along. Later you disconnect, the next day you reconnect (same server or different one, doesn't matter) and go to the very same barn and magically new loot appeared. Well, i would like to have such a magical barn near my place.

In reality, goods don't appear magically, they have to be produced. This leads to the next ideas.

Skills/abilities:

I might be dumb but in reality i couldn't repair a UH-1 even if my life would depend on it. In DayZ, everyone is a highly qualified engineer.

Let alone flying a helicopter. I play ToH but i wouldn't take seat in a real Helicopter on the pilots place. Same goes for other aspects, let me name a few that came to my mind:

- Engineer: can repair vehicles (non-Engineer could try also but with much higher chance that vehicle breaks down again in a very short time)

- Scientist: bring him your empty shells and the chemical ingredients and he will turn the empty shells into usable ammo (therefor the no-loot idea above). You can try yourself but be aware not to blow off yourself while mixing gunpowder.

- butcher: you can hunt but you will only get 2 pieces of meat out of the killed animal. Bring it to a butcher and he will make 6 out of it, 1 for him and 5 for you, since he did the job for you.

- Pilot: if you don't know how, you shouldn't try to fly a helicopter. Period.

- Medic:

There are surely more possibilities, will add them as they come up to my mind.

Point is, to have a reason to keep people alive, maybe even protect them, they should have more value than just the stuff they're carrying.

Wouldn't be smart, having a repaired chopper but a few mins ago killed the only player on the server who could fly it. ;)

So, to make it short, give players the ability to gain one of those skills (not multiple) to make them more valuable alive. Although i wouldn't deny some general abilities for everyone, re-read the butcher. Unexperienced players can also do this things but by far less effective. Once they've gained a skill, they should become better.

Often i saw the statement "it's me or him" when justifying playerkills. They are completely right, no doubt. I wouldn't remove that aspect so i'm also against punishments against bandits.

Point is, not punishing anyone but to give more and better reasons to think twice before pulling the trigger.

Oh, and one last thing, although a little OT now: every blood donor can tell you that blood regenerates itself. ;)

P.S.

Since now we can have female characters.....remember what Lt. Ellen Ripley said in Aliens: Ressurection?

"Who do i have to f*** to get off this ship?"

Think about it. ;)

Your ideas would not work in this game for many reasons, classes in this game is terible idea.

This idea has been throw around before' date=' but personally don't like the ideas of 'classes'.

Seems to much like TF2.

Well, do you know how to treat a dead boar to get the max meat out of it? Do you know how to repair a Helicopter or fly it? Can you remove a bullet out off your leg? Can you repair a nearly destroyed car?

I don't know about you (although i guess for most it is "no", simply for the car i see a nearly realistic chance for a "yes") but i couldn't for my life.

So, it's my humble opinion that "classes" would add significantly more realism to it. But i prefer not to refer it as "classes" as this seems something that have to be chosed before you even start playing. I prefer it more called "skills" that can be gained during actual playing. The "how" would be matter of definition though.

- Well, do you know how to treat a dead boar to get the max meat out of it?

Ehhh, shoot it, slide open the stomach, remove the intestines, jab a stick through it and hang it above a fire.

- Do you know how to repair a Helicopter or fly it?

Repair.. no, but give me a week or so and I can get quite far.

Flying.. well, aside from all the buttons, that shouldn't be to hard. practice makes perfect. Must add that I usually suck in games with vehicles aswell, so need to learn it either way.

- Can you remove a bullet out off your leg?

Sure, don't ask how much damage I will make while doing so, but that bullet will get out.

- Can you repair a nearly destroyed car?

See repairing a helicopter.

And you are totally right.

But I don't agree with the "improving skill".

When we wake up on chernarus, we were someone before. That s all.

Maybe you can choose what you are, maybe you can't. I think if you can't choose wich class you are when you respawn it is more interesting.

The process can be pushed forward but maybe it s not needed in Dayz.

But a classes idea is definiltly needed in dayz because it s an experience of what would look like zombie apocalipse, what are people is part of the main data for that expercience.

We don't care about what it looks like, tf2 was not the first, not the last.

That concept would just work well and prevent for shooting without reason to lot of people.

And maybe some morrons will stop running cherno - dying - respawn - running cherno if they spawn as a pilot per example.

So you could repair this in a week?

My respect, sir.

And as we speak of realism, you'd better know what these switches and gauges are for:

Well, of course i meant without doing even more damage.

- Can you repair a nearly destroyed car?

See repairing a helicopter.

Aye, see "repairing helicopter", although i admit that cars are by far easier to repair and a lot of people have already very good knowledge about.

Right now, I imagine Dharion trying to lift off his chopper he tryied to repaired with his bullet in the leg he pulled out.

Funny pic, I m laughing hard.

Yea it kinda is. You should still skin the boar though but that's about all.

Nope, but will probably get it running in 3 weeks if the proper tools and parts are available. I'm a quick learner. just don't ask me to look for the parts, that's a whole different ballpark.

In general though... since there is no backstory, you have no idea as to what your schooling is. People that spawn are already hardened survivors since they are still alive, so good chance they are ex-military and as such got taught quite a lot.

I could support an innate learning system that is completely in the background which improves time spend on doing something though. Say that after 10 times repairing something it will go faster due to having more experience or something along those lines.

lol ;)

No really I don't think you can repair a chopper in a post apocaliptic world even if you work hard all your life. And since there is no more internet, looking on youtube for "How to repair a chopper" won't be a solution^^ even if you are a self learner. Same goes to pilot it. Remember the first time you took a chopper in Arma? You probably crashed.

But what Dayz need for me is to give VALUE to people. I m sorry but this is almost inexistent for now. You want to be a loner? No prob... Just forget the chopper.

This won't force the teamplay, this will only force the teamplay if you want to live something who REQUIRED teamplay. Wich is.. logical.

You are a bandit? Well, you need to know that bandits care about the value of a life, at least lot of theim. That will make their choice harder too... do I really shot that medic?

Loner can be penalized yes. Just like in reality.

Loner is already penalized, you are alone and thus don't have any way to secure lost gear after being shot nor help when being shot at.

I will believe your word. Nonetheless' date=' the general idea isn't that bad anyway. Hope you do agree at least a little. ;)

Nope, but will probably get it running in 3 weeks if the proper tools and parts are available.

Hmm, average life expectation is actually 27 minutes. And, please don't take offence, i highly doubt you (or i for that matter) would get it running at all.

so good chance they are ex-military and as such got taught quite a lot.

I don't know of any army of this world in which combatant personel get instructed how to repair a engine.

Yes I do agree a little, as I said, would be nice to get a system in the background that will count times you did things and thus gives you a speed boost in performing some actions.

Faster bandages, morphine etc. Sure people playing longer will have more of an advantage, but you only keep this advantage if you stay alive. It should reset on death.

Wouldn't this be a more elegant solution?

I do like your input and i really appreciate it.

A slightly different approach that i could think of is a mix of our two points of view and split skills into somewhat like "basic skills" and "advanced skills".

Say somewhat like bandages would be a basic skill. The more you use it, the better you get. Or gaining meat out of animals. Maybe there even mix it up, basic low skill = 1 piece of meat per animal, basic high skill = 3 or 4 pieces, special skill = maybe 8 pieces.

Also on engineers. Almost everyone can change a flat tyre but re-build a complete engine might be a special skill. Maybe there even split for different cars. I think a old Lada might be easier to repair than i hightech SUV. The mechanics were just simpler back in the Lada days.
