I'd like to see this too, it would be cool to kill all the zombies on an area and have some time to run around "safely".

I really hope that the stand-alone game really improves the zombie spawns. I like that zombies seem to come out of the woodwork in a town, but having them spawn magically right in front of you, especially inside buildings, is ridiculous.

I would personally like to see a system where the number of zombies in/around an area is tracked by the server and realistically updates... for example, if a town had a human population of 20,000, then it would have 20,000 zombies that could spawn (obviously not all at once since the game can't handle 20,000 instances of zombie models). If 10 agro on someone and follow them out of town, then those 10 should be dropped off the town's population and added to that section of forest's spawn population. Also, if someone gets in a very loud gun battle at, say, the hospital, then zombies from all over the town would congregate to the hospital and leave other areas more sparsely populated.

From the game developer standpoint I think this would be fairly easily done with a map overlay using grayscales for zombie population. As zombies move from one area to another, the old area's byte of grayscale is decreased by one shade and the next area is increased a shade, showing that zombies moved... I could explain in more detail if anyone cares lol.

Over time the zombie population would decrease, but also it would spread out a bit. I think it would be interesting to see how the population centers spread out. Thinking of this, you could even have a new item that lets you get a satellite image of the area that shows where the zombies are most heavily populated a that moment.

btw, 20k would be a small town, probably 1mil for a huge place like cherno or elektro. I also think there should be roving bands of zombies, wandering through the woods looking for food, but that's a different post.

YES.

Just had this happen to me, found a helicopter crash site, went prone on a hill a couple of hundred meters away and popped all of the zombies with my Lee Enfield, then half way through looting it doing my extra checks incase I missed something, I seen a glitchy flash of a zombie infront of me, then I looked around and seen that about 10 - 15 zombies had respawned within 30m of me all around ¬_¬ Piss take.

Same thing happens to me in towns and at the N/W Airfield, just as I approach a building, 3 zombies spawn about 20m from me and do their spawning movement of dropping about a foot, then throwing their invisible rifle on their backs before becoming zombies. Even if they are just late initial spawns and not respawns, when someone is nearby, they shouldn't spawn. Zombies should be spawning WELL before a survivor is anywhere near them, not waiting until they are right next to them.

Omg, it looks like

bullshit. BI worked on Arma

very very hard and

i love all that they did.

Occasionally, i think that BI don't respect all

us and do it only for money. Oh, i just starting to write

shit, like OP. Nevermind.

I see what you did there.

Umm.....No.

(good idea, OP, I agree) as for THIS guy, hell no. Do you realize how hard it is to render 100 people? and you want one million + buildings + grass + trees + other players + vehicles + crashed vehicles?

FUCK. THAT.

In fact I do... I am a programmer and have done my fair share of 3d rendering, not to mention game design. If you look in my original post you will see "obviously not all at once since the game can't handle 20,000 instances of zombie models"

Perhaps I wasn't clear... I meant that the town would have a population of 1 million, but they would not all exist at the same time in game... if you killed or led away 10, then the population would _permanently_ decrease by that amount. Eventually you could get a town to zero and it would be empty. Is that less ridiculous to you?

Good job reading the post all the way through.

I for one think that is an excellent idea. Even just having a limit alone to the number of zombie spawn (even if it is in the millions) would be very interesting to see. I wonder how long the gameplay would last before deteriorating - I mean I wonder how long it would take to deplete the zombie population. If it were truly persistent, at some point the players would kill all of the zombies on a server since players respawn and zombies don't. Actually reminds me of the good ol' days of Arma I with those full on war campaigns and you had to clear out every single town on the map of enemy troops.

Good Idea except for the satellite imaging part.

Actually the satellite imaging part would be awesome! It could be implented as a rare upgrade module for the gps... population density...

I assume it wouldbe based on motion tracking, as I doubt Z's would give off enough heat to trigger thermal tracking.

I love this idea...

As a matter of fact, it slightly addresses end-game mechanics.

Decreasing the "available pool" variable of infected from a population value, or ADDING to that value for specific areas, is HIGHLY realistic and rather easy to manage. X number of Zeds just moved from sector Y to sector Z, decrease Z-count in Y by X and increase Z-count in Z by X. Since Y had a population value of 20,000... decreasing that value by 10 due to 10 Zacks running out of town after a survivor doesn't really affect the spawning of Z's in the town UNTIL the population value is sufficiently reduced due to excessive exodus or genocide action.

I can imagine this allowing for the end-game mechanics to be triggered... IE: Z-count is now down to 5% of original population value, therefore end-game mechanics are suddenly made available in that area. Things like: building an underground shelter (try doing that with a ton of Z's around you all the time... yeah right... this should only become available when an area is sufficiently "cleared" of Zed's)... or "rebuilding" city buildings like the hospital (imagine that supplies can be used to repair it to a working condition, habitable, powered, supplied, etc)... or "farming" to provide food (only able to be harvested by individuals who have received ingame "training" of farming, harvesting, preserving food skills)... etc.

...

I need to clean the drool off of my keyboard. ;P

I think you took the attention off of the original topic but that is a really good idea.

After patch 1.7.2.4 whenever i respawned at the coast and left my character idle a couple seconds or a minute or two later a zombie would spawn near me and instantly start attacking me, it did not matter whether i was crouched or prone.
