Dual 7970's, 6-core i7, 32GB RAM... 3FPS?!

Recommended Posts

I've read about 20 posts related to framerate issues, and I've tried several tricks. Here's my setup:

  • Running Combined Operations from Steam, patched with Dayz Commander to latest version.
  • Dual Radeon 7970's 3GB overclocked to max stock settings - rock solid in other games (Crysis is ~100FPS at full detail)
  • Intel i7 Ivy Bridge 6-core processor with liquid cooling, overclocked to 4.5Ghz
  • 32GB RAM, running a 1GB RAMDISK with all Dayz mod files
  • Sound Blaster Fatality Sound Card
  • Windows 7 fully updated

I was hoping that with a PC this high-end, I'd be able to run Dayz at full detail at 60FPS or better... but that isn't happening. With graphics on low / normal I'm getting 40FPS in the country and 20FPS in the city, with occasional drops below 10FPS.

Here are things I've tried:

  • I'm running my mod off of RAMDISK
  • I set the renderahead parameters to 1
  • I set scenecomplexity to 100000
  • I disabled all AA and postprocessing
  • Newest drivers / version for sound, video, windows, arma, and dayz mod
  • Set 6 cores and 7 threads in the launch parameters

I still find that my framerate will randomly drop to 3-10FPS. It usually stays there around 10 seconds, and then pops back up to around 50. This change happens even though I'm standing in one spot and nothing is changing. That makes me think that the slowdown is server-related, but it's happened on about a dozen servers in a row.

Anyone have suggestions?

How is your framerate in Arma2 OA? In Singleplayer there are some benchmark missions you can run, at the end it gives you the average framerate.

Don't know if you tried these allready, but it will help you rule out a connection/server issue.

Also, I've read somewhere that Arma 2 CO doesn't like Hyper-Threading from the i7 CPUs. I don't know if this is really the case, I don't own a i7. You can try to add "-cpucount=4" in your steam launch options or disable HT in your BIOS. Again, I don't know if it will do anything for you.

Also, view distance is a setting that has great impact on performance in ArmA2. I advise to lower it to about 1 or 2 clicks and see if it improves your framerate.

I hope you'll get some better framerates soon, good luck!
