The hatchet.

Recommended Posts

So very nice not having to carry firewood whilst running around the forest. It saved my life. Got lucky in a store and found a hatchet. Couple hours later I'm out of food, have no firewood, and very low blood. I finally see a cow while in the middle of nowhere, shoot and gut it. Run to the forest, harvest wood, start fire, cook meat, eat meat. I'm alive and healthy. Great addition.

I think it has been implemented very well, I'm sure some ass will moan about "why can't I get wood from any tree", well, it works well enough and doesn't take up any slots for stuff like food or ammo.

I'll be that ass! :P

When I first attempted to use it I got something like: You can only harvest from a tree in the forest" or w/e. When I was in a forest practically humping the tree.

I later tried it further in the forest and worked perfectly. So yeah, I'm glad it was put in as well.

Why can't I kill that cow with the fucking hatchet??!?! Why can't I collect firewood with a knife?

Because you would dull your knife and we don't have sharpening stones and the cow may actually fight back and then you would die to a cow because the cow is smarter and more adaptable than most Day Z players.

I can't figure this out for the life of me, ran into a forest and hugged some trees. Clicked harvest and nothing happened, no message or anything. So I kept going in and same thing over and over, finally reach the edge and it says you must be in a forest and near a tree. Am I missing something here?

Go into inv, right click on hatchet and click 'harvest wood' repeatedly (or we it is) while strafing.

You'l get it in 10 seconds, just be in a forest.

why is it a hatchet and not an axe? hatchets are tiny and trying to chop a tree down with it would take ages cry cry cry

I can't wait to find one so i can get this wood out of my pack and free up some space.

The hatchet is a bandaid applied to a flawed system, it doesn't fix a thing. Kindling is everywhere in Chenarus no need to collect wood, limit match usage instead.

Because you're not chopping down a freaking tree--you're merely gathering some branches for burning, the deader and crunchier the better. Cityfolk...

Hmm, what you have done is relied on a flawed or argument to backup your statement, not smart, simlar to using sticky tape as a bandaid. Bad idea.

Now just watch how easily it all falls apart when I even look in it's general direction...

Kindling is everwhere? Great, as it's used for STARTING fires, not keeping them going.

Now firewood or actual wood (as the game calls it) is not able to be broken by hand, and this does require a small axe, or a hatchet if you will..

Flawed bandaid you say?

Flawed Argument I reply.

Firewood is only needed if you're trying to keep a fire going, if you want to get really detailed here is a 'proper' system that doesn't rely on idiotic bullshit:

1) Matches spawn as normal, but have limited uses.

2) Forests have a similar feature to ponds, at any point a player can use the "Collect Kindling" action, this is limited by area (or by time delay if by area isn't feasible)

3) If the player tries to start a campfire in a forest, without kindling in his pack, he automatically gathers it and uses up that and a match. In plains and urban areas you can only light fires from kindling in your pack.

4) A fire will only last a couple of minutes without being fueled more, a slot of kindling in your pack is worth about two minutes of fire.

BONUS OPTION 5) Take time to cook meat, add purification of water and make that take time too.

Trying to collect firewood in a survival situation is hilariously stupid unless you've already got lodgings and plan on staying through winter.

I'm pretty sure I've kept a fire going irl with just shit I've found on the ground. I think you need to go outside more. That said, I don't give a shit if DayZ requires a hatchet, just one more goodie to loot. You can live on beans & pasta if you detest hatchets so much.

Made me chuckle ^

I'd like to be able to cut trees down and make a tree fort! Would be so much fun designing the best treehouse. Then we could all have treehouses and we could shoot at each other from them. It would be great, except all the bandits would fuck it all up :( Stupid bandits.
