Disabling shadows OP!

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to maybe require shadows to be set at least at normal? Disabling shadows lets you see so much better, but I just think that shadows look awesome and could be used tactically.

What do you guys think? What other advanced video settings drastically change the game?

Turning the settings on low makes finding enemies in grass much easier too

That's a tall order, but I see what you're saying. I know that quite a few PKers use stuff like this to their advantage. There's a specific term for it, but I can't quite recall.

Wow, I just turned shadows off in my video settings and I don't even need NVG's now. Kinda dumb.

Right? I believe that having at least shadows required at medium will greatly increase realism for all players. Alas, this is a double edged sword as, even for myself, I must run most of my graphics on low settings. However, it seems like shadows barely makes a performance hit (?)

Shadows cause a pretty dramatic drop in FPS.

But yeah, sure, screw the people who lower their settings so they can actually play. We want realism!

I read once that turning your shadows all the way up to the highest setting causes the game to use your gpu instead of your cpu.

For me, from low to medium shadows I lose 10fps and I don't see any difference!

This is why it's off for me.

I go from around 100+ fps to 40-50.

Did you tried this yet?

ATOC (Arma2 trees) = i cant see shit!

ATOC (Arrowhead trees) = there are 3 tents and 5 ghillie guys in the woods!!

//go to advanced settings and see the difference for you self

This is why it's off for me.

I go from around 100+ fps to 40-50.

Film is 24 frames per second. Video is 30 frames per second. High end HDTV is 60fps. 3D is 120fps, but it only uses half of the frames for each eye so it shakes out to about 60fps/eye. Most of the difference in the look of your video is the refresh rate of your monitor. Syncing it with your fps would do a lot to eliminate your ability to notice the difference between 24 fps and 100 fps. And the difference in frame rates would completely disappear if the game you're playing has motion blur. This would technically allow you to run smoothly and elegantly at 24 fps.

The rest is techwank.

I think any graphics setting under high is overpowered.

yes, force medium shadows at least imo, and force atoc full grass and arrowhead trees. if your dinosaur computer cant handle it, then stop playing video games and go get a job

Feel sorry for anyone with a average duel core trying to max shadows, shadows in general (all games) rapes the CPU. I myself got a Athlon quad @ 3.25 Ghz and the drop is performance is massive.

I myself play with everything on low cause i got a 75Hz screen and want 75 or more FPS constantly.

depends how competitive you are. I prefer an immersive world that draws me in and looks realistic, than getting the drop on people and having a wolrd that is blocky and looks like a 20 year old game.

I win my engagements by good tactics and quick thinking.

After getting some fps drops in areas like Cherno, I put my shadows to normal, instead of high. FPS raised significantly but I saw no difference in shadows between high and normal. Is this the thing Rocket was talking about, that setting some settings to lower, actually just puts them on CPU instead of GPU? Does anyone know, if any other setting handles the same way? I have a i5-2500k @4,4GHz so it's pretty capable in handling some of the work of my GPU.

This is a fact for all PC games, the higher you put the graphic options the more the load will shift to the GPU, ofc there is exceptions like Crysis which is mainly GPU bound and starcraft which is CPU bound. It goes into much bigger detail than this but cba to explain it all.

The blending of the tents is horrble. After you go away a couple meters you can spot them miles away in most cases due to texture & blending issues.

Maybe some servers could enforce some minimum video settings and some other servers don't?

And screw over the people with weaker computers? Not everyone can spend money on a brand new computer. Even people with jobs. My computer is enough to handle everything I want it to handle - why should I be forced to buy a new computer just for realism in a game that breaks your legs with doors and heals them with a morphine injection?
