gatorontheloose 29 Posted August 11, 2012 I played a bit of Arma OA in the downtime. I came back to my Day 5 character. This mod is pretty incredible. I died a bunch in Day Z but once I found a hatchet, matches and a water bottle I could stay alive long enough to actually start an adventure. And it has been a huge one for me. The map & compass came next, and I could plan my movements following elevation lines, raiding every deer stand I could. Hunting your own food is imperative for the lone-wolf player. It has not always been easy. I've negotiated for my life and have let others go. I was riding high, raiding cow country for meat & guns. I was under 1000 blood twice, blinded, yet i still managed to axe a rabbit after about 6 tries. I've crawled with broken legs to a town hospital. Basically I was the Joe Swanson story. But now I am 'stuck' on the perimeter of a city without even game to hunt. Every raid on the city costs me a food & drink refill, and the store is empty cans 2/3 of the time when I get there. My last warm meal was a small chicken. That was two days ago. I have enough cans now to make it to a water source, and back to the cow fields where I can set up my tents for the first time. Those who think I'm joking haven't walked the map unarmed.I agree with pretty much everyone who points out problems & bugs and there are like....many many of them! Lots of this buggy stuff is resulting from the Arma character interacting with Arma environment without the guidance of Arma mission scripts to clear the way. That's the trade-off we're used to, no? A massive open-world has to be mission scripted to keep your character inside the successful gameplay. For someone who 'plays realistically' inside most video games, the best part is testing the physics, testing the impact our choices make in the game, playing 'as you would in life' only griefing others when drunk & with friends. No same player can ever recreate the experience of a 'life' in the game. Same environment, same person playing, same 'mission' ('don't die') & rewards - completely different outcomes & adventure. Even if the Zs are a bit wacky, as a game experience this mod is awesome. Have my steaks for now. When i break a leg again on a Z pile you can wash it down with the ensuing tears. Not gonna say I won't quit one day out of pure frustration with some bone breaking bug but surviving this long has been a trip.
iboren01@yahoo.com 10 Posted August 11, 2012 I know the feeling, I haven't even made it to day 2, mostly because of bandits sniping me in the head, but this is the most fun I've had in a video game in a long time. Props to Rocket for the idea and making it happen even this far. I know I'll be picking up the standalone when it comes out and am hoping BI doesn't destroy Rockets vision of what this game is. I started playing about about 800k players and it's now well over a million. Looking forward to many more hours of heart pumping fun running through this barren world. Northeast 5 Posted August 11, 2012 To the OP: I enjoyed reading about your adventures, thus far. Thank you for sharing. I've really enjoyed the challenges this game puts forth and it's exciting to think that this game will only improve in terms of features, stability, and the fight against hackers. For years I've watched movies about zombie apoc survivors and I'm always amused at the stupid things they do. I usually find myself thinking I could do so much better. Well, lol, I have only made it to Day 4.Getting better and more experienced with each adventure though...
