psycho4r5 0 Posted August 10, 2012 Hi guys I know that when someone is shooting at you, you can determine how close they are to actually hitting you but i dont know the noise.I know there is a certain noise for when they are close to hitting you and I know there is a noise for when they are extremely close to hitting you. can someone please tell me what the 2 different sounds are and which sound correlates to close and which one correlates to super close?thanks in advance,CJ

psycho4r5 0 Posted August 10, 2012 so is there only one sound for when its close? I thought there was a sound when it was close and a different sound when its really close. your saying there is just a close sound and a hit sound? I dont really get the tchaaaa. is it a wizz or a pop sound?
Leeu 38 Posted August 10, 2012 arma vanilla/dayz is shit in most things sound related.whether a person is shooting 30ft OVER your building (the one you're in and hiding) or whether he's actually shooting 2 inches away from your head, it all sounds the same.whether he's shooting through windows at another guy inside a building across the street or whether he's shooting at you in your building through your windows, it sounds the same.
ben_c 140 Posted August 10, 2012 A sucking chest wound is a good indicator that the rounds are too close. If I hear the crack of rounds passing me I move. I'm sure I heard a thump of rounds hitting the ground but I'm not 100% on that one.

bloodofthedragon 35 Posted August 10, 2012 Without being able to use the better sound mods available for ARMA2 it is a bit more difficult to determine. My general rule of thumb is, If I hear a loud crack at the same time I hear a bullet strike near my pos. I know I'm being fired at.Also if you are observant of your surrounding you can also start to determine postion. For instance if you know there is a metal fence behind you and a wooded one in front, you hear a shot and it strikes metal....................he's behind you. bloodofthedragon 35 Posted August 10, 2012 (edited) OK thanks for your help, I understand now. but what is the actual sound? the first guy who replied tried to explain it as sounding like tchaaaa, I cant really match a sound to that phrase.A muffled "PoP" sound is further away, An Angry "SNAP" just went past your ear.ETA: It does this because the bullet is traveling faster than the sound of the gunshot. So when you hear the snap what you are actually hearing is the bullet itself breaking the soundbarrier ahead of the actual report. Again only if the round is close enough.Hope that helps. DarkwaveDomina 1099 Posted August 10, 2012 There's not really a way to tell. The overhead crack happens as the bullet passes over you, so in theory you could listen to the time between the gunshot and the crack like people do with thunderstorms, but the problem is that most engagements take place at something like 300m and the gunshot sound will travel that distance almost instantly. BTT` 15 Posted August 10, 2012 Yes that angry "SNAP"...I only ever hear the first one. ( and I don't care how close it is...as long as it missed me or left me able to run I will, if it drops me I know it was to close lol) The rest of the time all I hear is me saying "Oh shit, Help be baby Jesus" as I run like an Antelope out of control! Here is a clip of me purposely drawing fire to help my buddies determine the location of the shooter. There are two types of bullet sounds in it. I just thought it was the different guns not the distance of the bullets from my skull.
Ajvkorn 72 Posted August 10, 2012 You need to get the clip from Purepwnage and blast it over the direct microphone if you could get close to him, haha

Ok, yes you were being fired at from your right as you approached the hanger. The first two I assume went over your head or behind you as the sniper was attempting to lead his target. The third shot struck the hanger(42seconds in) itself thats how you can be sure he was firing right at you.If I had to guess I would say your sniper was on the hill NE of the airfield. BTT` 15 Posted August 10, 2012 Yes he was up on that hill and killed the two guys that were up there looking for him. lol Huh and all this time ( that clips is weeks old) I thought it was two shooters. Pays to pay attention to the sounds around you. You don't get much more information that that usually.

I dont really get the tchaaaa. is it a wizz or a pop sound?thisif its far away its gonna sound like poom poom otherwise if its super close and not suppressed its gonna be pshhh pshh. however when its suppressed its gonna be like pikk pikk
Zexis 127 Posted August 10, 2012 If you hear the thud of a bullet but no snap, it's near you.If you hear it snapping, the shots are inches from you (more or less).A whirring or whizzing sounds also indicated a close shot. Other than that, if you just hear the lower popping sound, someone is shooting but probably not at you.
daze23 549 Posted August 10, 2012 yeah, that cracking/snapping sound means they're headed in your direction. I've also heard them 'wiz' by me. of course seeing bullets hit the dirt right by you is usually a sure sign someone's shooting at you :)

Pays to pay attention to the sounds around you. You don't get much more information that that usually. The possibility still exists that you had two snipers. Couldn't tell from that vid.Just remember the (usually)best snipers operate in teams. One shoots, the other spots.
BTT` 15 Posted August 10, 2012 Going into shock can also result from a bullet being very close to you, no?
Aeoneth 163 Posted August 10, 2012 its simple, if you hear a bang it's close, if you hear a snap it's too close
