Proximity Login/Logout Notification

Recommended Posts

I was trying to think of a solution to the problem where people logout or login near you without your knowledge. I've had countless times where I have been stalking or camping someone, waiting for them to emerge from a building, only to discover they logged off. It's not very realistic to be waiting in ambush for someone who has ceased to exist. I'm not talking about the Alt+F4 people. Even if you had a cool down timer for log off, people will still disappear while you wait for them. It would be nice to know that the rooftop sniper you are waiting to kill isn't even signed in anymore. The opposite side of this, is that I hate when I have checked an area, and someone logs in behind me. It's not very fair.

My idea is either a message or sound that plays when someone near you connects or disconnects. It would need to be a fairly big radius, say 300m maybe, or else you would hear the noise, and instantly start running around trying to kill them before they finished logging in. Also, if it is a sound, you wouldn't want it to be directional. I don't want to give away the position of the person logging in, just alert nearby people to be on their guard again.

I'm not 100% on the idea, since it sound like people will find ways to exploit it, but any other ideas on this topic?

If you've seen them and got the name from mousing over you can then check the name against the server list (P) I know it's not ideal but it doesn't require a change to the programming and is available now.

Yeah, I've done that for DCers. Parked around the corner from a guy who Alt-F4ed, waited till he logged back in and ran him over with a bus. Even on Vet, you can see the kill messages for their name to watch if they return.

I've been thinking the same thing, should be some indication, but for both parties, or maybe just so you can't login very close to someone.

Ya this has happened to me too a few times, not nice at all, only thing to do atm is to check the list of ppl about to join the server and wait till it's clear, but you are never really safe when in a place popular for server jumpers.

I already made a post of this idea today, you should search threads before you make one because most of the time it has already been used.

This is a decent idea. Especially with the caveats you mentioned.

It's a good idea for all kinds of reasons... as you mentioned: the dude you're stalking has ceased to exist... good to know. The dude you're stalking has magically changed position... good to know... Even some random guy who just got home from work... if HE magically appears within a few hundred meters of you, it's good to know. Likewise, if you come home from work and pop into the woods somewhere... it'd be nice to know if you're alone...

I like that it's not directional... the goal isn't to get TOO carebarey... just to make it harder to sneak up on people by gaming the system. And since you're giving the EXISTING players extra knowledge, it's only fair to share that same knowledge to the guy that just logged in. Keep everyone on the same playing field. That way if you pop into existance and you get a notification, either "3 players are near you" or simply "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"... you know that they just got that info aswell and you need to GTFO... or lock and load... per your play style.

You should read posts before you comment. Yours is on Alt+F4ing, mine is not. ALT+F4 will be fixed one day, but even if it is, my issue will still exist.
