Wasteland question - Can anyone help expain what happened here?

When I quit for the night I had some decent loot.. When I came back the next day I started in the wastelands with NO kit at all (not even the torch, painkillers and a bandage). I quit and re-joined but now I was by the south shore and all my kit had been restored.

Can anyone help expain what happened?

Ah so it's normal? I mean, I've seen vids of the wasteland including some with GPS etc. but I had nothing.

ANd why have some other people bothered to run all the way back when they could just respawn?
