Msi Afterburner and me.

Recommended Posts

Right.

I've got an I5 2500k. not oc'd at 3.3ghz.

8 gig of gskilz ram at 1600 i think.

and an MSI Gtx560ti twin frozrII,

NOW.

when I pop to game with Msi afterburner open. and then close the game again a few seconds later... my GPU usage is at 100%

temp is hovering between 40-50.

anyone know if this is normal?

all clocks on afterburner are set to default

Do you join a server or just start Arma2?

CO or OA?

Can't tell for sure as I'm having MSI 460GTX's, but at least I could rule out an issue with Afterburner.

My Afterburner values in game:

Temp: ~55°C

Usage: 50-60%

Fan: 48%

I was in Cherno, looking at the appartments & hospital from that tall industrial building (yeah, that sniper spot...).

When I quit the game I had a very short peak (about 1 second) at 99% usage, but that seems normal to me as I'm pretty sure the GFX card uses all of it's capacity to free the video memory.

Afaik I'm having the latest NVIDIA driver.

How long does it peak at 100% usage?

it pretty much stays between like 98% and 100% when Im in game... drops to like 4 on the desktop lol

unless it's cos i started afterburner AFTER i'd booted the game?

Huh...

Ok, two things come to my mind.

1.) Maybe it's caused by launching Afterburner after the game's already running. That might confuse some parameters (or it's just poor coding in Afterburner). Try launching the game with Afterburner already running.

2.) Does Arma2 use PhysX? If so, maybe that's why your usage is at 100%. I have 2x GTX 460's in my system, one is PhysX dedicated. So your 100% actually might be f.e. 50% GFX + 50% PhysX. Still strange, but hey, it's Arma2 engine.

What I find a bit irritating is that your temp stays quite low for a 100% usage, I would assume that it should rise at least to something around 60-70°C.

Another question: can you confirm this with other games you play?

I'm confused... Why is there a problem at all? Your gpu being at 100% is great for temps of 50. It means your card is being used to it's full potential. My 6990 only gets used about 40-50% and its temps can spike to 75+ on the stock cooler.

KK just tried it with warcrap.

was between 50-60 usage..

must be cos I started afterburner after DayZ? surely?

Could be, just try it.

Other than that, as Nellocore said, as long as the temp stays low I wouldn't care too much about it then. Sure, it's a bit strange, but I don't see anything that would harm your cards health.

Hm, well I'm no expert with GFX cards, but I think you're wrong on that.

100% usage doesn't mean "to it's full potential", it means that there's either exactly the amount of data the card can process or (more likely) there's more than the card actually can process.

So, the more high-end your card is, the lower the usage should be - especially in an idle state.

A GFX card should always process things at it's full potential, that's why you get lower usage values with better cards. It simply has more unused power for you to enable boss settings.

As for the moment I ran out of options explaining your issue. Something (in the Arma2 engine?) must be bottlenecking hard and it doesn't cause the expected rise in temperature, or it's just wrong values read by Afterburner. Gonna ask among my friends, maybe one of them has an explanation.

As I said, as long as the temp stays down (and FPS are fine), I would say it's "ok" and you don't have to worry about it too much.

Definitely not related. It's either disabled on the server you joined or it's disabled in the beta patch. Maybe you need GPS now for it to show up? Would make sense if you ask me.

Still doesn't make any sense to me. If you have any explanation on why it's a good thing that goes beyond "don't worry, it's a good thing"?

100% usage can't be a good thing IMO as that would mean that my GPU can't process any more data as it is working at it's limit. It doesn't mean that everything is processed the fastest possible way, just that the GPU is processing all data it CAN process.

Is it a bad thing? As long as temp stays down, not necessarily.

But maybe the term "GPU usage" is different from how I understand it.

[edit]

A friend mentioned multicore. Don't know if the 560 is a multicore GPU, but it would make at least some sense.

With MACs f.e. every core is counted from 1-100%, so you can get a usage above 100% (which IMO is plain stupid...) on multicore MACs.

If the 560 is a multicore GPU, maybe Arma2 uses 100% of that one core. Maybe, if the second core is used, it drops as it is (very simple) 100% + 50% = 75% (on a MAC it's just added up, so you get 150% usage).

One more thing:

It could also be that the 560 underclocks as much as it needs so the Watt usage (and therefor heat production) is the least needed and the card's working therefor at 100% in it's current state.

Guys/ I have an pfftopic question but about MSIAfterburner.

Is there any way to record mic and in-game sound? Cause I can aonly capture either one or other, bot both.

I'd also like to record TeamSpeak+In-Game Direct Communication + Game sound

Thanks

Afterburner has nothing to do with sound.

You can record sound (and video) via FRAPS for example.
