Viewdistance and Grass

It would really help to reduce some lag for some players if they could reduce Viewdistance and Grass level.

Usally there is a script to cap the limit. Unless you in a high tower I've notice that its pointless to set the view to 10k. I just use 5k..

Well i can use 500 viewdistance when entering towns and 1500 once of town limits and allways grass turned off. Only way i can handle the large amount of items in vicinity.

It's enforced by a script and the reason is to make sure that everyone is playing under the same circumstances. I'd rather not see this changed unless it's on a non-pvp server.

Thats true.

Harm is done only player who wants to reduce hes viewdistance.

view distance should be player side. Allows people with less powerful machines to get better FPS which will bring better gameplay.

ARMA2 is still a very un-optimised game so some of the towns cause major lag. I get 16-18fps in Cernarus for example on my 4xCPU@3.6ghz and 560TI card, and thats on a SSD hdd.

Grass is always useless to have ingame as long as you do not see it at long distances.

If you have a bush of grass in front you that is really high you might not see anything but for the enemy the view is all clear if he watches you from the front.

Besides grass eating a ridiculous amount of FPS if you look through it with a scope.

Grass is terrible ingame, I am used to playing on Taki maps and with all this grass i've had to turn the rest of the graphics down on my 560TI 448, cause i've been getting alot of frame rate slowdowns.

Grass should never be changed client-side...it has impact on line-of-sight and camouflage. View distance I dont mind so much, as most players wont shoot you from over 1000m out (and can barely see you). But grass should be on for everyone. A player can probably do fine with permanent 1500m view distance.

Grass is horrible not only because it completely wrecks scoped weapons for most people. I mean it drains the FPS down to 17 for me... impossible to aim at running targets.

It also isn't there at larger distances. I know that the ground level gets lifted up by about 10cm but there still are 2 issues with that:

1. Not all grass is the same height. There is A LOT of grass in which you can perfectly hide and noone can see you and you can see noone. But if the guy now is 100 meters away he can see you all fine but you have no chance at all to see him.

2. On range the model still has its clear lines that stand out of the background if he is lying. No matter whether a few centimeters of his body are missing.

So IMHO the grass in ArmA 2 was a nice try but it ultimately fails at anything besides being eye candy.

People with lower grass would have advantage over people with higher grass, fact. Grass should stay as it is

Maybe some dont know there are 3 types of grass if i recall correct.

Full -> Medium -> Some and totally off.

with the smallest amount grass would make many people happy im sure.

And for my point of view i think viewdistance should be adjustable by player cos it has no disadvantages regarding to other players.

Just a suggestion to let us with crappy PC's to be able play this awesome mod too :-/

The basic grass level is bearable because it is about the height of the distance grass and doesn't stick itself into your sights all day if you are aiming crouched.

And that sticking into the sights really kills your FPS big time.

Have you ever hid in grass and the guy 100 meter from you was just perfectly able to see you because the grass disappeared in his view?

I mean maybe in reality even walls you hide behind disappear from others views...

That is true but majority wants to keep some grass so the lowest grass is fine.

I hope attleast we get adjustable viewdistance in some point.

I do not have anything against the low grass which is about the same on close and distant view.

As well it doesnt suck many FPS in scoop

Well if u prone the avatar submerges in the field which emulates the grass hiding you.

My hint to those whose rig can't handle grass is to save money and buy Sandy Bridge, it can handle the grass easily.

Anyway I don't get the complaint about grass blocking view and the ability to see standing avatars further away when half the servers have 3rd person mode and crosshair enabled. With those you can prone and shoot ppl as u wish. Get rid of those options I would say. It is pretty much same as cheating in PvP scenarios.

The issue is with the LOD for grass. It has been brought up many times in this thread and all those posters had merit. The grass doesn't draw the same at distances and as such those who are further away do not see the grass at all while the player who believes he is hidden sticks out like a sore thumb.

Short of disabling grass the only option is not hiding in an open field, which you probably shouldn't be doing if players are after you anyways.

And while unlocking view distance might help those with weaker PCs it can also help those with hotter ones too. Nothing like 10k view distance and good scope.

Personally, even my roommate who has like, the worst computer in the world, can run the game just fine with the grass.

I think you're just too lazy to get a better computer.

I upgraded my rig by doing side jobs using skills I had while I was unemployed after getting fired from Walmart, while still paying my rent, phone bills, and car insurance. The only reason i asked anyone for ANY sort of money was because my roommates forgot to inform me I had to pay a little more than double rent one month PLUS a deposit, cause they're silly. >->

Wonder what is going to happen to all of you when ARMA 3 comes out.

Yes I am being a little elitist, I'll admit that, but bemoaning an issue simply because your computer can't handle it is a sign that your computer can't handle it, not an issue of the game itself. I will admit, though, ARMA 2 is an unoptimized POS that is CPU bound. :(

But still, the grass is fine. What ISN'T fine is how dark nights are >->

Yea...this is a big game. If you want to play it, you should go out and get the minimum specs
