Hackettbear 1 Posted August 6, 2012 Hello. Newby Day Z/Arma 2 player here. I'm curious as to how I could have handled a situation better and I was hoping for some tips. The Situation:Myself and three friends are grouped together around a vehicle. The vehicle is parked in the woods next to a road at the bottom of a steep hill. As friend #1 begins to refuel the vehicle, he's shot and instantly killed by what sounded like an AKM. Another shot and friend #2 is down bleeding with a broken leg. A third shot and I'm down in the same condition. As friend #3 jumps prone under a tree, I manage to crawl behind one myself that blocks vision from up the hill and quickly bandage myself, morphine, and eat the last of my steaks. Friend #2 calls for my help, he's still by the vehicle, unconscious and bleeding out. Friend #3 seems safe for the time being. Here's a map of where we were, the red circle represents our position, where the orange oval represents the general area in which I believed our shooter to be located.http://imgur.com/A99sGWhat I did:I didn't believe I could assist friend #2 without dying myself. I also believed the shooter to know my position, so I didn't want to risk edging out and attempting to scan the area with my binoculars. Friend #2 was nearing death and I felt I had to do something, anything, so I decided to book it across the road and act as a distraction whilst he woke up and bandaged himself. The shooter didn't take the bait, friend #2 is shot again and finally killed. At this point I'm across the road and had yet to take any fire, unsure if he had seen me or had been too distracted killing my friend to notice. My hearts racing and I'm looking around frantically as I proceed up the hill, trying to find him before he kills friend #3 and myself. As soon as I reach the area I assumed he was I hear the loudest shot yet, simultaneously confirming my suspicion and nearly causing me to shit my pants as I die. This is a map of the route I took after patching myself up.http://imgur.com/lHxQRI personally feel as if I wasn't patient enough, perhaps I should have left the entire area and spent more time attempting to flank him, I don't know. I wanted revenge for the death of my friends and I just wasn't completely thinking straight. What might you have done in this situation?

Rudson (DayZ) 61 Posted August 6, 2012 I have to say, you did what you could man. If you get ambushed from a higher position it is very difficult to get the upper hand in a battlesituation. You acted like a man, trying to protect your friends. Running up the hill wasn´t the best idea, you should have walked in on him more from the side. if your friend 3 would have walked up the hill from the other side, you could have had a chance but not knowing where your enemy is it is nearly impossible to win this battle.good luck for the future man.so long Rudson. Baelethal 102 Posted August 6, 2012 Tactically, you were meant to lose that day. Assailant had elevation, and an unknown location as well as the element of surprise on his side. You were pretty squeezed in that ravine, there wasn't a whole lot more you could have done. Personally, I would have followed the ravine east and cut up to one of the hillsides on the north, waited and watched. If the assailant started to move in to loot your friends or the vehicle, you would have turned the tables with elevation, unknown location and surprise on your side.
Baka Survivor 20 Posted August 6, 2012 You did ok. The dude had a drop on you and probably had a ghillie suit. Its hard to say what I would have actually done in that situation, but I think I would have not tried to flank him, but instead waited for him to reveal his position. You had cover, he might have been just concealed, not in cover. In that case you would have gotten him if you found out his position. If crouched you can peek from behind a tree by pressing q and e, maybe if you had played the waiting game he would have tried to move to better position or maybe he would have fired again. You and your friend could have just waited, peeked from behind cover time to time, and let him make a move.
Bludy 324 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) as the distances are quite bigger than other fps games, you should have taken a longer way to flank him, for example going up the hill but over the yellow point instead of turning left and straight towards him. the initial situation was shitty, but as he waited to kill your mate utilizing him as a bait maybe he wouldn't let you go so far..you did very well, it was a tough decision, but better die with your friends than disconnect Edited August 6, 2012 by Bludy
Swineflew 480 Posted August 6, 2012 I probably would have flanked a bit more and came around the back side of the hill he could have been shooting from. That being said he probably still would have gotten the kill on you since its hard to find a hidden target before he finds you running around looking for him. Hackettbear 1 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the responses and suggestions, they're very much appreciated. I'm slowly adjusting to this game, it's very different from your average MoH/CoD FPS. It seems as if it focuses more upon placement and patience than even your capability to aim, because really it's all about survival, and if you got away from the encounter without killing them, well that's a victory anyways. I'm definitely enjoying myself. Edited August 6, 2012 by Hackettbear
