I suppose this is jumping the gun slightly, but do you think that the standalone, if or when it ever appears, should have support for a modding community?

No, with various servers it would cause problems and angry players

if its a stand alone game, with single player functionality then whats the harm? even if it does have multiplayer functionality whats the harm? this mod is the perfect example of how mods prolong the life of games and keep them moving forward.

Yes but don't allow mods to access to the hive, outstanding ones could be chosen and be made official at some point
