Something that nobody understands about DayZ

Personally I like the players who rush in fast, at my gear level, I am quite literally only going into a city if I need to restock medical supplies. with two canteens, water is a non-issue as long as I plan my travel routes carefully, (And I keep a spare can of coke for emergencies) and I can pop a cow/boar/goat whenever my food runs low.

What this means is that all I need from "civilization" is ammo from deer stands and farms, and morphine/bandages/painkillers from towns and cities. With such a limited dependance, I can watch a location for a long time, waiting for the perfect time to strike. And that's when my love of fast players comes in. They run, make a lot of noise, move in predictable patterns, and flush out snipers and zeds for me, all the while leaving the low value loot I'm after in its place.

How it usually happens is I'll take a vantage point, I'll see someone book it through town, gathering up the zeds, if they attract bandit attention I can keep an eye on them too, once they are about to leave, I make my move, keeping low and moving quickly in behind them to grab what I need. This strategy has kept me alive for quite a while

As far as I know, it's intentional that Zombies can't walk in buildings. I wouldn't care either way if this was changed, but given they can't run indoors, I don't believe the 2-door trick is any more of an exploit than hiding behind a tree to lose Line of Sight.

As for the play-style, there isn't really a right or wrong way of playing DayZ, but there are certainly more enjoyable ways. I played like you OP, only I didn't even have to go into towns, given I could totally sustain myself outside of them. I had 6 weeks on that life. But, 6 weeks in, I saw 6 guys in a group. And I figured, you know what, I'll probably die, but I bet I have more fun in this next 30 seconds than I have done this past 6 weeks.

And I did. The went into the castle, and given it's a no-nametag server, I casually just walk in amongst them, before pulling them into a firefight with eachother, managing to take down 3 before I went down myself. Absolutely glorious. And since then, I've never lived more than a week, because I've been playing in a much more enjoyable way, nipping through towns, stalking the airfield, and yes, hunting players. DayZ is not about survival. It is not about PVP, or PVE. It's about whatever you want it to be, which is the beauty of a sandbox game. There is no award for living the longest, or getting the most kills, or anything. It's just total freedom, which is what makes DayZ fantastic.

People can only have opinions on this, there is no fact. My personal opinion is that DayZ shines in human interaction. Nothing comes close to the pure tension of encountering another player, whether or not he's hostile, friendly, medic, survivalist or whatever. That for ME personally, is what DayZ is about. If you wanted to survive without encountering people, there are plenty of single player games which can give you that. But totally unique human interaction in a simulated survival scenario? That's what makes DayZ for me. And anything that can bring more interaction, such as requiring people to go into towns more frequently, bringing the map borders in, reducing the amount of equipment available, would make the game better in every way for me.

That is your style of play, I have mine. Neither is more fun that the other by fact. We both have different ideas of fun. I am having a blast playing this, because as far as I'm concerned, I'm winning. And avoiding people as much as possible makes it ridiculously tense when i actually DO come across someone. Far more tense than usual.

THIS GAME REQUIRES LARGE AMOUNTS OF PATIENCE.

Made that nice and big for you. Who cares if I call it a game. It's good enough of a mod to be referred to as one.

This is a mod for a game that already requires large amounts of patience. This isn't Call of Duty, where you are thrown into battle, and all firefights are over in five or ten seconds. Skirmishes take several minutes. As for DayZ, if you haven't noticed, there is a lot of walking in this game. Therefore, to survive, you must travel long distances, some of which take twenty minutes to a half hour to complete. You are all lucky that we don't have stamina, otherwise it would take even longer.

Aside from the miles and miles we have to travel, zombies also throw in another thing that requires patience. If you go to loot a town, you have three options. Sneak, Rambo, or Exploit. Rambo means running into towns, going to where you want, then shooting all the zombies that follow you. Exploit means run into town, then use the two-door-building exploit on them. Sneak is my method, and I feel that it is the safest and provides the most profit. This requires you to move into town very slowly, crawling most of the way, and alerting as few zombies as possible. I have now reached one month on my current life, and by using this method, I have only alerted ~20 zombies. The Sneak method also provides you with the most ammo upon exit, if you don't alert any zombies. Sneaking also reduces the amount of attention you receive from other players, as most don't see you. It will take far longer, but it assures the most gain.

TL;DR: Stop saying that the game should be more fast paced. If you want to enjoy DayZ, then start building patience. You will survive for much longer if you have this kind of patience. Stop running into town, using the exploit on the zombies, then complaining about how easily zombies are aggro'd. K? K.

I used to play sneaky and lived for long enough. But as others have stated - it takes considerably more time to sneak around everywhere. The time efficiency of this method is not high, you get the loot slower, you meet less players etc. Now we just drive into a town, loot everything and leave the town asap with zeds trailing us. Looks epic and much more fun. In such playstyle I've found considerably more gear and met more players, found more heli crashes. And my current character is alive for quite some time now.

I have never once said that this is how people should play. I am simply saying that people need to stop complaining about how DayZ is a "hiking simulator" or how many zombies they aggro'd when they ran directly into town running for the biggest loot spawn. People should understand that this mod needs patience to be played. Got it? If you don't understand, feel free to re-read that a few times.

Could u give me an example? I am playing like a rusher and our camp has +10 cars by now. Zombies too didnt bother me after half a day of playing.

Stop acting like professor dayz and shooting those wisecracks, you sound like some arse :)

I was in under the impression that this is a survival game. PvP is not the focus of survival games. Survival is. Yes, the two can overlap, but I intend to live as long as possible when I am playing this game.

Survival most assuredly includes surviving other players....likely as real as it would be in life if this catastrophe occurred.

The zombie/infected are predictable, the human element is not. THAT is what causes people to whine (all hack/scripts aside and not included in this discussion), the fact that they get out played or out thought by someone who had to THINK to out do them. In most games like CoD and others that might be out there, the only skill that is required has nothing to do with thinking. It has to do with who can move the mouse or has the best memory of a map and locations and can run the little maze-like maps the fastest to get to the little spots the earliest. I really don't know how anyone plays the brain twitch, gratification crack like games like BF3 or CoD or whatever else. :huh:

Speaking of public, yeah. But matching up against people you know and who are good actually challenges you mentally as you have to consider their actions and your surroundings

How old are you in-game?

At the moment, day 27. Had a few close calls, and some -extremely- close ones. but I'm still having fun.

I will admit though, I'm actually kind of hoping I do die soon, I miss the challenge of trying to get that basic gear I needed to survive the first few days. After I got a decent weapon and some hunting supplies, the game has become a lot easier.
