NPC protected safe/trading zones

Recommended Posts

People seem to like the idea of fortified areas which is cool but it's still player controlled and doesn't transfer well from server to server.

What I believe is a good idea is areas within cities or on the outskirts (Maybe a few around the whole map) that are protected by NPCs and offer trading/safe zones.

This provides a few benefits:

  • An area for survivors/beggars/traders to go and have some protection from NPCs - Shoot and be shot kind of deal
  • Provides an area where Clans/Bandits can attempt to storm
  • Offer an area to hire people for contract killings/jobs

With a couple of major areas and maybe one or two villages in between it would add a nice dynamic to the whole game and provide some sort of economy. It means that there are places n00bs can go but it's still not completely safe from raiders.

Guess what happens on the border of your safe trading zone? I'll give you a hint: it involves sniper rifles.

You may make it into that safe trading zone and manage to trade 5 steaks for a syringe of morphine but I doubt you're going to make it out alive.

Every building in the game is a safe trading zone at this point, as long as the parties involved are interested in trading.

Absolutely this is going to happen but that's part of the risk in being safe, plus for bandits how easy would it be to kill people sniping the safe zones...

The point about having the zones tho is that within the confines of the town/village/area would be patrolling NPCs.

It could also be a great place to meet up and organise groups to head out.

The idea of building up zones to be "safe zones" could be done in a different way. This is my idea of having temporary safe zones.

In order to deem a town "safe" a event would happen in which a player or group of players must liberate a city from zombie inhabitants. Once the zombies have been removed, a small amount of NPC's would spawn to defend the said town. zombies would spawn in the exterior of the towns and try and overrun the town again but the town has it's preset defenders. Those defenders fight off zombie hordes but do not have infinite amounts of ammunition therefore cannot indefinitely defend the said town.

The npc's would spawn with handguns but can given any higher tier weapons with ammo to help defend. It's actually up for discussion so I am not saying that should be exactly as I say it.

The zombie attack could happen once every hour and in between you have time to rearm. Any loot zones will stop respawning so it is fair and the zone can be used for whatever reason. However, if someone kills another player, all guards in town immediately become hostile towards that one player and will attack and kill the said player on sight.

This would prevent the emergence of 100% safe zones because they won't always stay and can moved.

Main cities and airports all the way to military locations cannot be liberated as they would be near to impossible to clear realistically speaking.

The other addition to perm npc protected areas would be to have a heavily armed/protected weapons storage. This would add one thing missing from Dayz - an objective.

I like the idea of Zombie zergs that would be awesome - kinda like in SIlent Hill when you hear the siren it's time to get the guns out!

I don't think you understand the purpose of a player-driven sandbox.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that Rocket stated that no NPC survivors will be added to this PLAYER-DRIVEN SANDBOX GAME. Something like this should NEVER, for the sake of DayZ be implemented in this game. I just can't find words to describe how much this would ruin the game. And like some people have stated, the only thing that would happen is it would get filled with snipers and when you get within 600m of this "trading" post you will get lit up like a Christmas tree.

P.S. In a real Zombie Apocalypse who would set up these trading posts? The government sure as hell wouldn't. Their first concern would be getting the virus under control, not allowing survivors to trade in a "safe environment". One of the things that I love about DayZ is its pure simplicity, it's just loot and do survive however the hell you want/can. Adding a trading system would have to involve a currency system which would immensely complicate the game. And on a side note, I feel that any games that have a NPC text chat box takes the realism right out of the game.
