Hi, I would love to join you guys and have someone to play this with. I've been lone wolfing it as well, pretty sucessfully too. Just starting to get bored. I have all the best gear in the game (L85A2 and all equipment). I'm 31 and live in Hawaii.

Azrael, you have great listening skills and practical skills. You were listening to what everyone was saying, trying to help and proposing effective solutions. I think my approach shows I'm a bit of a loner too. Ordinarily I just make my way but last night I found it very difficult to hang around the coast waiting for another player who may or may not being coming and wasn't sure where I was. It's the uncertainty that leaves me uncomfortable and concerned. Of course, it's not easy for the other person either, who's trying to find me.

I'm used to being responsible for my own mistakes, and I confess, I do seem to be struggling with group dynamics in dayz. I guess if you're someone who can re-gear in an hour, death's not such a problem but if it can take two weeks then death's bit more of a pain. I don't really mind it. When it happens I'm furious but then I think, ok so another chance to run around on the beach and head to a city.

One of the issues I think was very obvious last night is it's a new group of people. Communication was chaotic and there seemed to be little sign of people protecting themselves or the group. Looking back it was really very funny that I was telling people off for standing next to the truck and not questioning strangers standing with them and I got shot in the head by the strangers at that very moment! Another lesson learned. :)

I think the group needs a leader, either each person on a rotation or key roles should be agreed. (Not me, I'm no leader!) With a big team there needs to be one voice, one agreed message, one focal point. A project, a reason to be in dayz for the main group who are working together - even if it's "head north" or "find a camp" - is helpful too. But our biggest strength and protection is forethought through discussion and agreement in skype or teamspeak or wherever, before going into dayz. It will help people understand their roles - so when you get there you know who is responsible for protecting the truck, who carries the tents and the kind of location to set up.

For example, who was watching the truck when it was stolen? Whose job was that? How did someone walk up and take it? How did a guy in a ghillie suit walk up and join us and then kill us near the truck? And why didn't I shoot him when my every instinct told me to? Because I thought he was one of us, hence my question, "who's that standing next to you?". Unfortunately, response was "don't know" and the entire teamspeak server shouted "shoot him in the head" and the gun was then pointed at me! So I blame myself because I should have some how made everyone listen to me but I didn't have the experience or skills to get them to - and that's why I shouted back about not shooting me.

So what I'm suggesting is, to play successfully in a larger group, tactics and manoevres should be agreed in advance, and we're new at this. That's why I suggested watching some of devildoggamer's youtube videos. His team move in and take a place with speed and precision. Well worth checking out. Of course, it's still fun, or what's the point!

Again, I thought you were extremely kind and helpful. Thank you. :)

I remember when I first played DayZ as part of a group I initially found it frustrating. I couldn't concentrate because of everyone talking bollocks over TS and I'd been playing on my own for quite a while. Now I've settled into it I prefer playing as part of a small group. 3 seems perfect for me or a maximum of 4 people works. Any more than that and you need to start getting strict about communication or just play with people that don't have verbal diarrhea. It takes a while to find a group of like minded people for you to enjoy it properly. I still enjoy playing on my own but now when I'm part of a group we usually have a quick chat about what it is we're doing and off we go! We've never had a clear leader but we have settled into specific roles that we're comfortable with naturally. Once you've played together for a while you start to move quickly and quietly and can lock down an area without even needing to decide how. Each member just knows instinctively what to do. It takes awhile to get to that point though so stick with it.

It's also worth noting what your team members play style or favourite weapons are. I love the Mk48 and frags so I usually fill a support/suppression role. One of my mates is bloody great with a sniper rifle so that's another role sorted.

I have not yet traveled with your group, although I would like to eventually. Based on your account of your most recent venture, however, I would HIGHLY suggest that all of you A, Play on a server with nametags so you can quickly identify teammates, or B. Go into your player profile and choose something easily identifiable. You could all wear the giant aviator sunglasses, or you could all play as the black guy. Or you could all trade your valuables away for camo clothing so you are all in uniform. Something along those lines.

EDIT - Oh yeah... assign roles based on equipment and experience. Have a veteran player with an L85? He is now your permanent lookout and spotter. Someone brought along an AS50? He should follow the group at a distance, or else go ahead of the group and stay in the trees. Just the little things make a big difference, like having everyone dismount from vehicles when you stop for gas and having them all looking outward, scanning the hills rather than watching the guy with the only jerry can run back and forth.

Sounds great. I'm a talker but only when messages need to be sent or are not being heard and then my talking gets louder and ruder. :o Yes, small groups are great but even a small group is only as strong as it's weakest link. As you say, takes time to settle into the right kind of group. With a large group, separating people into smaller ones that work well together could be helpful.

Angel, that's a fantastic idea re profile. And only the spotter could wear a ghillie or something like that maybe.

That stems from my experience in the CNSF clan (a fantastic group btw). We all played as the black guy, and we all wore the ridiculously large aviator sunglasses. There was never any confusion about who was with us or not.

Reading through some of the recent comments I think you guys need to pick custom faces and clothes that match so that anyone coming into the group will be easily picked out as Friend or Foe, if you guys want I have 2-3 camo clothing going spare that I could send your way I know its not many but it's a start.

Angel knight, spot on I think part of the problem has been we are traveling in much larger groups ie 6-11 people and all look different and then we have trouble knowing who is who and when someone walks in and steals a truck we can't notice it due to too many people in one place and no name tags or visible identical clothing...

Maybe we should keep it to smaller groups for now ie 3-5 people when doing set tasks...

I also think maybe a few of us starting as fresh spawns and going to cherno to gear up together... I have learnt how to gear up in 30 mins and head north and by doing this together a few times in small teams we will see who likes what role or how each of us can work better and it puts us at more of a risk than running through fields but we will be new spawns so won't matter if hacked or killed so much

Like you say Sula, it is a game and should be fun too. We're frequently chatting away and having a laugh but it's equally important to know when to shut up. Angels suggestion is great. I always wear the stupid oversized Delta Goggles. They look silly but there's no mistaking me. One of my mates always wears Aviators and another always plays as the old man with the grey beard. We can tell who is who just by looking.

So I think maybe start on nametag servers, all setup a tag at the front of the name ie [old] or something and all decide on a look, maybe the black guy as most people have the default looks so less chance of someone being mistaken for one of us... then if someone does try to walk in and steal a truck or just appears nearby... keep it simple on comms... all prone... foe.... engage...

I agree all good ideas and yes the main thing is we all enjoy it, no point if people are going " right im standing here doing nothing and being told what to do on comms and im bored..." maybe set missions that you have to be on the ball and maybe sometimes a campfire time or a time we can just run around and not have to worry too muc about missions and if we die we die...

Traveling with a group of larger than 4 people requires more organization, but it is certainly possible. When I served with CNSF, we conducted raids (raids for loot, not player killing) on cities and hotspots like NWAF and Stary. You do need to do a few things to make it work, though. You absolutely must cut down on pointless chatter so people can hear important details. Mumble is a VOIP program that allows you to divide into groups, and have two separate hotkeys for which group you are addressing. For instance, F2 talks to the two you are traveling with, while F3 speaks to all 12 of you, etc. This enables you to quickly ask something like "Hey I see three guys coming behind the truck, is that any of you?" without having to switch channels or talk over people. I don't know if Teamspeak has this function or not, but it is helpful.

Have a designated driver and someone to guard the car, always, and immediately shoot anyone getting into the vehicle that is not them. :D

It's up to people's personalities how strict you can be with this; you want to have a good time, and imposing strict rules on spamming the comms or carrying on conversation will make some folks uncomfortable. I personally talk constantly while I play, until I see a hostile. Then I become a ghost. As long as everyone understands to stop talking when there may be a fight, then you can probably get away with having everyone on the same channel. Just remember that entertainment is the goal, and do what's fun for everyone. I personally think having your whole group hunted down like rats because you can't tell who is who or hear what's going on is not very fun, hence I establish those rules with my group.

I have changed my profile name to have [old] in front so if we play on a nametag server anytime its easier to spot us.. I have also donned the large aviator glasses and have a dark skin now.... so if we all have similar looks it will be easier to know who is on our team or not... less shooting people in the backside or letting strangers amongst us

Hello guys, I was browsing through the thread and didn't find the TS or DayZ server info, do you usually share it by pm? Been playing alone for the last couple of weeks and am missing the group experience :)

Cheers,

Cheers :)

Also, I'm a lady, no choice of skins.

They have a teamspeak "server" to talk and join dayz servers.Go to that address and you're in (assuming you have team speak). Otherwise for those not using teamspeak but skype, just contact people on the list (see link in earlier post).
