Buy the game just because of the mod

I'm planning on buying the game because I really like this mod, but I have got one question, do I need to buy Arma II and Operation Arrowhead or can I get Arma II ``for free´´ and then buy Operation Arrowhead?

You can. I have it and play normally with friends. The installation is a bit more complicated, but you can play normally like others.

My advice is to buy CO.

If you play solely for DAYZ you are mission out on a vast wealth of amazing gameplay/mods/gametype (indeed, other zombies).

Don't just play one mode, play them all.

I bought Arma II just for this mod. I bought it on thepowerlevel.com , paid 14 euros for a steam key for combined ops. Had the key within 5 minutes of payment, for only 14 euros it really is worth it :)

You need OA and either the Free arma or payed for. I went for the $30 for both arma and OA because I didn't want to run into any problems with the free arma.

No, they are not. I barely see a difference. And if he is only going to buy it for DayZ, he should get the cheaper option. Why? Cause DayZ will go standalone soon anyway
