How to know which houses are salvageable?

I must suck at seeing which houses I can rob because I only find like 2 loot spawns in each town I go to. And I usually sneak my way all through the town. I try to look at the windows but that doesn't work for me, if the house's door is closed I usually don't bother with it. I've been through 4 towns and I've found like 4 items. It's been a waste of 5 hours. The most valued thing i've found was an rifle with no ammo = ( . I would rather have a knife and matches for my useless rifle.

You're doing it wrong, very wrong. Try barns, deer stands, apartment complexes, school/office building, and there are plenty of houses you can loot.

The key thing is if a building is enterable is usually will have loot.

But, it may have been recently looted, or just spawned empty or tins etc.

Also, I find if I drive to a lootable building, the engine doesn't keep up and the building will be empty for a while, so one has to walk away for a bit and return in a few mins to find lovely loot.

Learn what the models of each building look like. The same model of building can always be accessed (although there are one or two closed houses that look similar to open ones). While learning this, keep an eye out for any transparent windows. Only a minority of buildings are fully accessible so it's ideal to see the windows from the front of the building.

Also note that one or two buildings will have a door that's barely enterable with a loot drop just inside the entrance. And some houses will have a shed off to the back or side which spawns loot under a small sheltered area.

If the door is closed on arrival AND there are no transparent windows, the building is almost certainly not worth trying. It appears not many players like to stop and close doors behind them.

If you can see through the windows you can enter the house :) Most lootable buildings look the same so you soon get the hang of things.

Even buildings you can't enter can have loot in outside toilets or sheds.

Don't waste time with houses imo.

Barns are better for starting out, although I usually head to a city, supermarket loot is just too good to pass up.
