GPS Options

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have been using the GPS in DayZ for a bit now.

It does an ok job but I really want to make it better and more useful.

With most GPS systems you can make waypoints, and you can zoom in and out ect.

It would be really cool if you could implement some of these into the game.

And on the map, you can put....

Also the GPS is from Arma, learn where to write to, you choose the wrong ½ of the "game"(mod)

There shouldn't even be GPS, honestly.

Not long after an apocalyptic situation the satelites that aid in GPS functions wouldn't be able to work properly.

They would eventually give false information before ceasing all functionality.

Well some would be good for some time, but it would in reality vary a lot depending on how many systems were involved. Because if it was just a satellite and a gps the system would work for a good amount of time, but if you has ground centers involved and such then failure would happen sooner.

But I think waypoints should be removed, unless you have a gps. But I rather have the gps be able to set up a route, so if you have a vehicle you know where to turn all the time.

I just don't like the fact when your hidden(under a tree, behind a building) that sometimes that GPS tells other players where you are. Yes veteran servers remove this, but it just shouldn't be able to do that.

That's a server setting, and it makes things you mouse over show up for a certain amount of time.

Hell, I was running through a forest towards my camp on my way back from filling my canteens and found a heli because I had to check my map.

Apparently I had unknowingly moused over the heli on my run through the forest; had some decent loot in it.

Thank you. Great discussion. The technology of GPS is complex, but the basic concept behind it is simple.

you sure about that? my intuition tells me gps satellites don't need much maintenance or calibration, especially when it's so damn hard to send someone to space and that it runs on an atomic clock, ensuring precision.

the better argument would be batteries.

I don't think the satellites orbits would degrade, in fact I'm pretty sure they would be able to operate for years without people monitoring them.

If I remember right, the atomic clocks in GPS satellites don't match the rotation of the Earth, so they end up behind by something like 0.7 seconds per year.

I'm guessing the GPS locator would get less and less accurate as time goes by.

In any case the GPS makes navigation in game too easy, it should be removed simply because of that.

EDIT: Looked it up, Wikipedia says to match clocks on the ground, GPST should be adding 1 leap second every 18 months.
