Usage of humanity when dogs are implemented

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, here's an idea i got watching the latest machinima live-stream

To take it bluntly, dogs could be able to "smell" the humanity of an individual. Their far greater extend of relying on instinct than humans could allow dogs to warn their player if a bandit is near. For example, if you're standing right in front of a bandit the dog would yelp or growl at that person. I mean even men subconsciously registrate if they like someone or not, they feel (un)comfortable just because they (dis)like the kind of men they are facing. I hope you kinda get what I'm trying to say...

Anyway, the dogs also could give you a sign when a friendly survivor is near, like trying to lead his master to him, or he could yell if in a zed- and bandit free area. Depending on the latest interactions of a player, a dog could notice the humanity faster / stronger. Like when a bandit just shot someone - he will have the smell of blood on him, or at least of gunpowder if he didn't loot. Rain or taking a bath could clean one from that, so it is really hard for the dog to realize what kind of player he is.

Could be one method to use humanity properly.

Rocket said you should be able to train your dog. So show him once how to kill a survivor and he might be able to do it by himself, after that. Pretty similar to what rocket said about hunting animals with dogs.

Anyways, that's not really part of this topic, it's just how to use the humanity in a meaningful way and not dogs in general.

I am interested to see dogs introduced and see how they affect game play, I would just attract dogs and charge at someone camping a building :D

Guess all this stuff will come up and be tested in near future, so let's see. It would be awesome if it enables you to trace players, hide from them or find new group members. But I think it will become a bit messy when you're crawling into cities, right through zeds. There should be found a way they won't attract them, like leaving them behind "safe" in the next forest, or anything.

Seems like I could forget to get some feedback on my original idea...

There's a certain body language in real life that gives away peoples' intentions and gives people "vibes" when they interact. It's not a sixth sense, it's just observation taken from years of interacting with normal human beings. And dogs, since they have spent millenia dealing with humans and reading us, are especially good at it.

It'd be cool if this humanity sense was detected by people naturally and lower humanity set it off more strongly and if your dogs were even better at it and would growl whenever someone with evil intentions approached.

to be honest.. im a bit scared about the whole dog idea..

i tried playing with the dog at gamescom.

but the dog was slower, did not attack or anything, he could identify animals however..

the thing im afraid of, is that the dog will give away your position etc etc, and just be a nuisance.

it would be a shame if i had to waste a bullet every time i spawn to get rid of the dog.. (would be a shame for the dog ;) )
