Generators

Recommended Posts

Just an idea to give jerry cans some more use and to help mitigate some night time complaints. (There was a similar topic about a week ago but it never progressed anywhere and didnt really go into much detail in the original post).

Anyway this suggestion is to add gas-powered generators that spawn randomly in towns across the map in certain marked areas. Powering these generators with fuel from jerry cans will cause certain lights in the area near the generator to activate and provide illumination for all the poor little survivors and bandits. They can be damaged by players and zombies to stop them from running.

Yada yada yada more details below.

Generators

----------------------------

Spawning Guidelines

Generators are spawned randomly in towns (in various pre-determined spots) around the map once the game begins. Airfields are considered towns for the sake of spawning.

It is possible for a town to spawn with no generator or even multiple generators (depending on its size with random small towns only having one at most while coastal large cities can have a max of three).

Chernogorsk, Elektrozavodsk, and Berezino will always have atleast one generator spawn within the town.

Generator States

Each generator can spawn in three different states.

1) Active : A working generator with a random amount of fuel already in it and starts running once the game begins.

2) Repaired : A generator that has been recently repaired but has no fuel. Requires a Jerry Can to fuel.

3) Damaged : A generator that has sustained damage recently. Requires a ToolBox and Scrap Metal to repair.

Active generators that spawn will begin using fuel immediately even if no players are within the area. Generators that spawn as Active will have no zombies spawn within a set radius around it until players enter that radius.

Repaired generators spawn without fuel and require players to fuel them using jerry cans. Become Active generators once they are fuelled.

Damaged generators require players to repair them using a toolbox and scrap metal. Will not take fuel from a jerry can until repaired.

Generator Effects and Mechanics

Once a generator has become active it will light certain street lights and houses within the area around itself.

When a generator becomes active zombies in the immediate area will head towards it and attempt to damage it.(See exception above).

Zombies do not spawn in illuminated areas powered by a generator.

Generators can also be damaged by gunfire and explosives from players.

If a generator becomes damaged while it is active it will immediately cease powering the area and lose all fuel currently in it.

Generators can store a maximum of ten cans worth of fuel from jerry cans.

Please post comments, opinions, and point out inconsistencies and derpyness of the above.

This is kind of a neat idea. People would definitely fight over the generator hot-spots it would cause a lot of friction at night for sure. I don't like the damaging idea. I think gas alone should suffice and Zeds should not be attracted to the generator or the street lights anymore than in daylight if it simply supplies power to a "grid" in this sense. I do see people fighting over it though. It will cause a lot of night time gun fights and or coop to get into those parts of town to hole-up for the night.

I think Z-people should be attracted to the noise a running generator... generates. But not attack it. :)

Well the damaging thing is so that bandits or zombies could destroy them if left unattended. Zombies are only attracted to it once its fuelled so after clearing the area of them it would be perfectly safe from them. The lights themselves prevent random zombies from spawning but dont intentionally attract them to the area.
