This thread is fraught with error. Shooting a cow three times in the head doesn't reveal the meat! It was a coincidence, and I often find myself searching for several minutes (like in this video) for the meat in vain.

How to actually get meat.

1. Shoot animal

2. Gut animal

3. While gutting animation is still going on you will get a gear icon. You can press G at this point or mousewheel to gear.

4. When the animation stops your gear will open up and you can take the meat.

I didn't have to do this until the most recent patch. Probably a bug.

I've found 3-4 shots quickly works better than one shot at a time... also, I am not sure that they have a 'head' hitbox.

Animals move around now, it had blood when I shot it in the butt, and yes, yes I do have a macaroni pistol. *squint*
