I want to put this one out there to the community for critique:

Horses. Yes horses.

What are horses?

A food source, a method of transportation, a companion, something to protect, something to mourn for when lost, an asset, a liability.

A horse in game would be all of these things plus more. They could spawn anywhere, be found anywhere and be as rare or common as rocket wants.

They would be client side, so your horse goes with you when you change servers.

Besides being a food source comparable to a cow, a horse would also provide a transport source given the player can find a saddle and reins. Then to keep the horse healthy it would require heaps of water and the opportunity to graze fields. It would need medical attention if injured, and could die if attacked.

Finally, the horse could carry another pack in addition to the one carried by the player. It would mostly be for horse related items.

I think this is both a achievable ( read: codable within the engine) and realistic. It would also provide a more Difficult but rewarding end game for experienced and perhaps bored players.

What do you guys think?

I would LOVE horses to be in the game, it's whether or not they can be properly coded in that is an issue.

Legend of Zelda & Red Dead Redemption had horses. I think with that said, to make this game truly memorable, it will need horses.

I like the idea, but you can ride a horse without a saddle and reins too, you know. Also, medical care? Depends on what kind. If a horse has a broken leg, nothing can be done about that. In the real world a horse will be put down in almost all cases. Blood bags for a horse wouldn't really work either, considering it's human blood I guess. But I really like the idea, I thought about it too :)

I'd rather have a bike but I heard the limits on vehicles was due to lag or something.

Could be wrong.

No, something CAN be done about a horse with a broken leg... It's just, at the owners expense, they don't take the time to care for the animal, it becomes useless to them.

Dumb, you can't just walk up to a horse in the wild and expect to tame it, also it doesn't really fit with the feel of the game, this isn't Red Dead Undead Nightmare :P.

Also you can't expect client side vehicles to ever be implemented, it would be far to easy to exploit.

EDIT: I'm all for more wild animals to hunt and eat however.

You're forgetting that these aren't wild horses.

I would assume they are free horses that got out when society collapsed, so they'd already know humans.

I quite like this idea. I live in an area with a lot of ranches and have even seen a guy riding a horse who did not look anything like a "cowboy". With the lack of refineries for gasoline, automobiles would be less common in an apocalypse.

It totally depends on where the leg is broken and how bad it is broken. Like I said; In most cases a horse will be put down. In some cases where the injury is minor, and the horse isn't used for competitions etc., and you have a lot of money, you can do a surgery on your horse. Altough this is usually extremely expensive, as it will require the horse to hang on a sling/crane etc. for a certain amount of time (Few months depending on the situation) to heal the leg. A horse with multiple fractures are usually put down because this causes them extreme pain, especially if they have broken for example both front legs, as they will not use the legs for month, and yeah you get what I mean. My sister has had horses and still has one, and I used to ride horses myself too. (Link to article)

Good idea, but why is this in General Discussion? Put it in Suggestions.
