How To: Survive the Coast

Recommended Posts

Getting 'off the beaches' can be a bit of a challenge in DayZ, especially if you start near Cherno or Elektro. This is a video showing how I go about surviving the first twenty minutes of life in Elektro, a city as close to the wild west as Cherno. Includes a few helpful hints, and tips, and quite a bit of unnecessarily crude language.

This guide may or may not get you killed...in fact, I was quite lucky.

Pro-Tip: Grab some gear and hightail it inland.

[EDIT: I think this vid would serve a better purpose in this forum]

Thanks for the vids. Just finished Part I, and have to laugh a bit... I always try so hard to be stealthy all the time, and still will inevitably get eaten by zombies who trip over me or get shot in the face by bandits, and then I watch this and you are pretty much just running full-tilt the whole time. LOL

IMO

When you've just started after dying, or it is your first time playing you have nothing to lose by running and ramboing your way through towns til you find some good stuff.

Because if you die, its not like you had any good kit to be up set over.

Yeah, nice vid. Have spawned near elektro a few times, and that place is always my destination before heading out. Those buildings are full of potentially awesome stuff (for the first hour at least) in such large quantity. And then there's also the possibility of finding dead players, which often could reduce the time to get a big pack, a decent primary and perhaps even a map/compass/gps right away :D

Yeah, as long as the stuff you got on isn't really of value, you're not really that considerate about your surroundings... The longer you live though, and the more cool stuff you accumulate in your inv/pack, the more paranoid you become ;D

crossbow works great actually. me and a friend use one to sneak into towns. 1 shot anywhere to a zombie will kill them now

I lived in an apartment building in Cherno for several hours before heading inland on my latest character. They have one entrance, several rooms to hide in, and every footstep sounds like a T-Rex walking around, so anyone coming up to meet you can be warned away, with lead or in side chat.

Surely thanks for the effort into making some videos.. but those are just terrible! I didn't looked em all.. but the start made me quit it pretty fast: running for no reasons + attract intentionally the zombies + shoot at em wasting your precious ammo? Man this is not CoD .. it's because ppl of ppl watching this videos that the games is transforming into a run&gun .. like any other FPS. I know ppl have no patience at all.. but there's so many games out there where you can do that, why trolling in a game where the FPS component isn't that great?

??

"I watched ten seconds of your video and I noticed you had just left a CoD server and never played any arma game ever. You're ruining everyones fun by collecting gear and running away from the n00b area. Shame shame shame"

Come now, I started playing this series when it was OFP. Not to mention I didn't engage any other players...and makarov ammo is everywhere. If you want patience, watch my airfield adventure.

Let's not turn this into a COD thread, people are entitled to their own style of playing. Even if it may not be the best or efficient way in some players eyes.

nice video rhodes, i encountered you ingame a couple of times. It surprises me how "fast" you play, and also the lack of food you take with you even with low health. If you don't care to take it with you, why not eat it and get your blood up to par?

I just noticed about the backpack thing at the supermarket...

You can go to the backpack you want to loot, click Open ALICE Pack, now left click your backpack and open it, then you can just transfer things directly from your pack to the pack you want to pick up.

If on the south coast i just walk North until I hit a road/path/town, form there I begin the process of looting everything in site, I never go "Rambo".

Maybe I'm just lucky and not spawned opposite any campers.

I'm guessing this video is some sort of joke?

If not it should be titled "What not to do to survive the coast"

I usually only try to scavenge in the busy coastal towns at night, if at all. Server population is usually a bit lower, and if you don't use flares, your chances of getting sniped are fairly low. Even then I won't get greedy, just check a spot or two, then head inland. If I get a compass right away, I'm gone, otherwise I might look at another place. For me at least, the compass is key, especially at night. And people in the north generally have better gear, so killing them is more profitable/fun than killing for maks and beans. The coast is generally where you go when bored and just want to shoot people. So with that in mind, don't be a victim.

Start and move inland, avoid all coastal towns.

Do not use main roads, follow the tree line everywhere you go. Avoid open areas.
