Kazu (DayZ) 2 Posted August 1, 2012 Can anyone give me a few tips on how to get better or be better at shooting? I'm playing Boot Camp on Arma 2 and OA but according to the Firing Range on both the Boot Camps, I'm like the worst shooter alive. Is it just me? Or is shooting in Arma a lot harder than it is in Call of Duty and other war games? The be more specific, on OA Boot Camp I passed the pistol and rifle test. Once I got to the SAW, I just raged. I can't do it. I don't know why. But regardless, I'm not that great. I couldn't pass the regular Arma 2 Boot Camp Firing Range either.

Drblodski 53 Posted August 1, 2012 LOL just LOL. The shooting is about as far as you can get from CoD or BF. Practise more. Shoot less rounds at a time. Allow for bullet drop. zoom and hold breath.
bluecrackers 175 Posted August 1, 2012 Of fucking course it's harder than CoD. Why the fuck do all these people come to this game expecting to play nazi zombies? Arma 2 is a mil-sim game, so yes it's going to be harder.
NightRipper 284 Posted August 1, 2012 Protip: when shooting, point the barrel away from you.

Arma 2 is a mil-sim game, so yes it's going to be harder.I don't mean that I'm surprised by it not being like CoD. I expected that as, like you said, it's a simulator. But I can hit a target on CoD. On this When you move your mouse, it sways kinda weird and not like I'm used to and it's hard to move your aim an inch to hit a small target instead of going from one side of the screen to the other. I've never played a Military Simulator before. So obviously, I'm not going to be the best. But what I'm curious about, is do all players have difficulties with this? Or is it maybe just my settings or something that are giving me a hard time?
Dregdor 11 Posted August 1, 2012 (edited) yes, it is harder than any other game i know of. try playing some of the single player missions, or practicing in the editor. it will help alot. and yes, most people suck at aiming in this game. even people who say they are good tend to suck :P so just remember, pracice makes you dead less often Edited August 1, 2012 by Dregdor

So I'm guessing it's just one of those "learn by doing" kind of things. Thanks.

REALISM.
ZedsDeadBaby 2287 Posted August 1, 2012 Don't shoot standing up if you can avoid it. Take a knee at least, prone is best.Don't shoot while tired/breathing heavily.Don't fire rapidly. Short, controlled bursts will allow your weapon to return to it's original position after recoil.Pick a weapon and get familiar with it's effective range. Bullets will begin to fall beyond their effective range so past that point you need to start aiming high to hit your mark.Lead moving targets.Stick with one weapon or a category of similar weapons like AK's or M16's and practice only with those. You cannot master every weapon in the game by learning one. Pick something and get good at it before moving on to another type.Practice with friends. Human targets that try to survive are more realistic than metal targets.

I know that. I shoot guns with my rother-in-law who is in the reserves. But during boot camp in the game, the targets would only be up for a split second and I wouldn't be able to get my sight on it fast enough to shoot them.Lead moving targets.I know this concept in other games but I've never had to use it. How do you know how much you need to lead the target? Just pure estimation?
ZedsDeadBaby 2287 Posted August 1, 2012 I know this concept in other games but I've never had to use it. How do you know how much you need to lead the target? Just pure estimation? It is dependent on weapon, target velocity (not just speed) and distance to the target so, yeah. Just estimation. This is where experience comes in handy. Eventually you will just get a feel for it.
Kazu (DayZ) 2 Posted August 1, 2012 It is dependent on weapon, target velocity (not just speed) and distance to the target so, yeah. Just estimation. This is where experience comes in handy. Eventually you will just get a feel for it.Alright. I'm just hoping experience comes pretty fast in this game. Ha. It seems starting off, you have the odds WAAAAAAAAAAAY against you. Drblodski 53 Posted August 1, 2012 Very important - go in to game options and turn both view bob and aiming deadzone all the way down to nothing. That might help you more than anything.
Tree (DayZ) 1 Posted August 1, 2012 Alright. I'm just hoping experience comes pretty fast in this game. Ha. It seems starting off, you have the odds WAAAAAAAAAAAY against you.Yes, you will die. And you will find weapons, and then die again. You will die repeatedly, but this is a lesson. Why? Because even if you have Nightvision, a .50 Cal, and a Silenced M4, you could easily get killed by some noob with a hatchet. The Golden Rule of DayZ: Don't be afraid of dying. It will happen, but by being smart, you can make it happen a hell of a lot less often.
dallas 5195 Posted August 1, 2012 (edited) ^^What Zed said.First thing I do, whenever I have installed a fresh copy of OFP/ArmA1/2 is to go into controls and unbind "hold breath" from right mouse button. While aiming you need to zoom in on your sights more than you need to hold your breath. If you zoom in for more than 2-3 seconds, you also hold your breath for 2-3 seconds. Before too long you're out of breath and your accuracy is completely destroyed. If you like sniping reassign hold breath to another key, so you can steady your aim on long range shots.Next. When firing with a light machinegun keep your bursts obscenely shot, tap that trigger, otherwise you'll hit high and to the right. Only fire long bursts when very close or to suppress an area. When shooting at training targets in ArmA, I usually bring up my sights, zoom in and then lower my aim, so the sights don't block the area I'm scanning for targets. When I spot the target, I quickly raise the sights ans shoot.Lastly.In ArmA the bullet you fire is spawned from the chamber/the middle of the rifle and not from your sights. This means, just because you can see a target in your sight, doesn't mean your bullet's path is clear. Your sights are higher than the chamber, so if you're peaking over a wall make sure the barrel and chamber is clear of the obstacle too. There are many factors in place. If you're shooting from 1st/3rd person view, the camera is placed a bit higher/left of your bullets path and you'll have to make minor compensations. If you're using your sights, you have to compensate on shot ranges, because your sights are higher than your barrel. You'll also have to compensate for ballistics. A rifle's barrel is not perfectly parallel with it's sights. Since gravity affect the bullet as soon as it leaves the barrel, bullets are fired in an upwards arch. If a rifle is zeroed to 300 meters, the first part of the fight, the bullet will travel upwards, above the sights and peak at about 150 meters, then it will drop, untill it reached the sighting point at 300. After 300 it will drop below the weapon's sights.Learn to spot the impacts of your bullets, so you can make adjustments based on dust clouds/blood spatter. Rudson (DayZ) 61 Posted August 1, 2012 My two cents:Before going fully automatic change to single shot mode. makes it a lot easier to control your weapons.
