International players filling up the server

Recommended Posts

This last week I've seen an enormous influx of international players on the ZA1 server, to the point where some ZA players don't get space on the server, and it seems 90% of the international players who visit our server are Russians. This happens even when Russian or European servers have loads of space on them.

So, let me get this straight. If those players can play on servers closer to them where they will receive much better pings, and they are taking up spots on a server that I host for the people in MY country, I'm still not allowed to kick them? How is that fair?

They have at least 15 servers to choose from in or close to their country, and South Africa only has one. Mine. South Africans don't really have any other options if the server is full, aside from going on international servers where they have to deal with latencies of 250ms upwards. Why can't I kick those 25 Russian players who are taking up the server slots on a server hosted for South Africans? I can understand if their own servers are full, then mine is fair game, but it's often not the case.

We have a ping limit of 300 on the server, but most of them seem to slip right under it.

Set ping limit to 250. Problem solved.

Yeah, set your ping lower, whats the problem? Most are chasing daylight but if you want local players a lowing limit would do it.

Most of their pings are under 250, though. I'm going to try for 230, but I'm just scared that if local players get sudden lag spikes, or check up on other stuff on the internet their side, they get kicked.

Our server also used to run perfectly fine up until a few days ago, when it started lagging constantly and often crashing. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the international players, as it only started when their influx started. Is it possible international players are placing a much higher strain on our server?

I used to restart the server every 12 hours, just to ensure it doesn't run out of memory, but now it starts lagging like made after every 6-8 hours, and it often crashes during that time.

Rebooting a server every 6 hours is a perfectly sane thing to do with this mod. Also, take in mind the past updates meant lower FPS, and further strained the central database.

How are the South Africans not able to play on European servers, if it does work the other way around? Is the internet connectivity there that bad?

It's just that it's not fun playing on servers with 200+ pings if there's a local server where you can get pings of 10-100ms. Especially not if the people filling up the local server can go play with much lower pings on their own servers.

But yeah, our internet is also pretty bad here. The average household still has either 384kb/s connections, or 1mb connections if they're a bit richer. Very few people have 4mb or 10mb here, seeing as it's horrendously expensive. The country's telecommunications infrastructure is rules by a monopoly, which in turn is pretty much owned and managed by our corrupt government. We only started seeing the introduction of uncapped about a year and a half ago, and even that is pretty bad, seeing as it's shaped to hell and back.

Sucks living in a third-world country. :P

Russia (western) is almost at the same timezone as South Africa so chasing the daylight is not what they do.

Some russians like server hopping at airports (cheating). thats the problem.

Indeed. I often find Russians logging in or hanging about at the northern airfield and the one near Balota. Never been to the third airstrip, but I'm guessing it isn't as popular as the other two. Few people seem to travel up the eastern coast.
