Axes have many uses, chopping wood for fire, chopping faces for self-defence, chopping libs of zombies and many other uses where a blunt object also is needet, like driving nails or simple carpentry.

You can't go wrong with including a handaxe.

Gameplay-wise, it would add a lot.

Coding wise, as I understand it, it would add one hot mess of problems.

I believe rocket said something about being unable to implement a hatchet for whatever reason, for firewood possibly.

And it has been said one hundred times, ArmA 2 does not support melee at the moment, I don't doubt it can be done eventually, but it will take a lot of effort that simply conserving ammunition could solve.

Ok, mabye not chopping people or zombies, but at least chopping wood!

Wood takes up a helluva space, it spawn indors with zombieas all around and it takes up spawnslots from guns and ammo.

The great irony (which I think has escaped noone) is that 99% of the map consists of forrests.

I don't know about you, but during my time in the wilds we would tear up grass, bark and dry twigs (yes, twis remain dry low on the stem of pines, even in rain) and make our fire from that. Having pre-chopped wood was only necessary when we had to heat the twenty-man tent for an exte3nde period of days.

BTW. How does the zombies kill in close combat?

I think it's just a case of if you are within X distance when they play the flappy arm animation you take damage.

could they not just make a weapon that shoots a very short distance and has infinite ammo, and play a custom animation for the melee weapon?

There are already ArmA mods that do melee, so it's definitely possible. Also the zombie scripts are done client side, so it could simply be case of doing a very quick collision check.

Yeah i would like to see some sort of melee weapon. Possibly a crowbar or machete. These could also have a secondary use for example a crowbar gaining access to locked buildings or machete for chopping wood for fire or shelter.
