Anyway, i will not make any comment on the form, only on the substance.

On the contrary i want nothing more than this mod to succeed, but it won't happen if the community fragment in thousands of little walled gardens where everyone cook his little stuff.

No they don't, they signed a contract/term of service that specifically state that they aren't allowed to affect the gameplay.

I suppose i need to explain myself a little more clearly.

Yes, we have currently a pretty big hacker problem, but we also have a problem of server hosts being in breach of the DayZ Term of service and that's an issue too.

So yeah, i'm all for Admins ensuring that their server is running properly and hack free. But admins are also players, and whatever power the Dayz dev team allow them to fight against hackers can also be used to abuse legitimate players or for personal gain.

There are so many edge cases where i've een "this guy must be a hacker!" when "this guy" is just simply really good, or at the right place, at the right time.

On top of hackers ruining servers we also have admin viliglantism, or even worse, admins that will use cheats themselve, either to combat hackers, or to give themselve an edge.

I've had my share of server administration for various games, but i'm not that wealthy anymore, or i would probably host a few dayz servers. However one example i can give you was the minecraft PVP server i used to run. There was no play rules, the only thing was "do not hack, do not harm the server".

I ended up hiding that i was the server owner to avoid players coming at me for X and Y reasons and actually never played as an operator. I wanted to PLAY, not become a worshipped god.

But i know how it is, the temptation is always there, a player blow your camp or steal your precious goodies and it's always sitting in the back of your mind.

"oh i'm gonna spawn myself in a bunch of glowstone, just this time"

"oh i'm gonna ban this guy, he is driving players away"

I've not always resisted the temptation, and we always make up bullshit excuses to justify our actions. Some of us have grand ideas that .. frankly are not what DayZ is about since they require specific "advantages" in order to be viable ( Green mountain radio for example )

Ideally if the game was mostly bug free and mostly hack free, admin intervention would be completely unneeded and we could all be mere players. This is a very important thing to understand, ingame admin presence in a well working game is not required, and if DayZ ever become hack free, players will expect you to stop presenting yourself as admins and become mere players.

This is a game that will eventually only need someone to ensure the machine keeps running.

I'm all for combatting hackers, but i will still chime in everytime the power used to fight against them is used for personal gain.

As much as I would love to disagree with you and defend the fact that they're trying... I don't think they are :\

Love the game, like a lot of the people who play and I enjoy server admins like you. I don't see any reason that this is has gone on this long. However, I know this thread is totally pissing in the wind... Nothing will be done about the hackers, simply because this is in Alpha. I suppose it's good that we're seeing how people are using cheats, scripts, pointers, etc to abuse aspects of the game. I guess it's better that it happens now and not after the game goes live.

Maybe things will look up in the future, but I guess for now the main rule is as said before: "Don't get attached to your gear. Why? Because either a player, a zombie, a bug or a cheater is going to kill you."

What I don't understand is why... Why would someone want to kill everyone on the server? It's pointless... My buddies had a theory... They think it's a lot of the people that come from FPS arcade games (like Call of Duty) and can't take the slow-paced, 30 minute flank gameplay. So since they don't like the game, they start googling for ways to cheat.

I'm not sure... I could say so much on this topic that this post could take up an entire page but it isn't worth it really...

Guess the best thing we can do is watch and wait.

No, because without any sort of killing, DayZ would be another boring game.

Real survival in the real world is different, because you literally feel it happening as it courses through your life, but video game survival you just only feel repetition and get really bored of it.

In reality, you cope with something because you don't want to die, in video games, you withhold those feelings and as such you feel very bored of the game after you attained a good level of it.

DayZ bores me too, not because of pvp and such, but because it's a alpha and because it was Rocket's fault to release a alpha to the public too early.

I don't agree with this at all. Almost ALL the games we have had recently are pipelined or one way. Very few games released let players ACTUALLY have a choice. DayZ offers this choice on a GRAND Scale. Such a hunger for a game like DayZ has been boiling over for years.

I remember when I first played Resident Evil 1 and 2 and thought to myself, you know how amazing this would be if there was some kind of MMOFPS or MMORPG of Resident Evil?

Then DayZ came and fullfilled my dreams after over ten years of wondering, while games continued to crumble and get worse. Graphics through the roof but limiting gameplay and shit stories.

DayZ completely flipped the spectrum on its head and many game developers took notice. This I am VERY thankful for. even if DayZ crashes and burns, or makes it big. I am VERY thankful for what Rocket has done and I am very glad I was apart of it.

Nope, DayZ isn't a genius with gameplay or anything, it just did something that many other zombie games did, it just had the Arma II content for more realistic data than the other mods/games because they didn't originate on a military simulator.

And it's not because DayZ was a awesome game that it got everyone's attention, it's because of the way it presents itself that caused that attention to be directed at it.

It has survival like most games, but it does it almost exactly the same way too, Gather items, craft items, survive.

Heck Minecraft got insanely popular because of that simple reasoning too.

So what does cause a game to get overly popular?

Timing.

When time passes, people's needs and wants changes, but DayZ and Minecraft happened to provide specific feelings for their respective communities and this results in a chemical reaction in our brains.

As for choice. I don't see many choice compared to some sandbox games, its just that we know less of our choices that we think we have more choices.

You get food, get medical items, get guns, and your choices are to eat, heal, craft, shoot, run, talk, and die.

That's it. That's all you are ever going to do. EVER. DayZ never fulfilled any dreams, everyone is just that retarded, and woke up thanks to the internet in the last 10 years. Before high speed internet, society was a lot closed minded.

DayZ is not something game developers take a nod at, it's something modders might take a look at it, but nope.

You've probably never heard of the half life 2 and half life modding (or Gold Source modding), I've been around the game communities on the internet and seen a lot of things, and I'm sure there are much older people who knows more about stuff back to the pong days.

The little voice in my head wants nothing more than DayZ to fail because that's the only way it will learn (and how rocket will learn about the reality) about game development. So long as DayZ continues to attract people to buy Arma II, it would end up making Bohemia's head too large and ego too huge to care about the modding community. In fact if they realized that modding extended their profits, they'll try for the 'be cheap and get more money' strategy where they'll put less effort in their games so people will continue to be drawn to a mod of a buggy buggy game system.

Rocket's ability to mod is one thing, but Team Wolfire's ability to not only develop a indie game from scratch, but to present a preview of their alpha builds almost EVERY WEEK, shows how much effort you need to dish out at a MINIMUM.

It's much more impressive to see a team of developers/programmers come out of nowhere and take the internet by storm. A single modder who's team or independant work made a popular mod that made a company rich, is nothing compared to that.

Yep, a guy just destroyed my camp with 7 vehicles in it with a satchel charge, but Im lucky that I was the server admin and restarted and got the bastard banned, but yes, Its really out of control, 40% of DayZ players are cheaters, is almost becoming worse than Counter-Strike!!!

I found a satchel charge without cheating - so basically you just abused your admin powers to keep your own shit?

It's not a MMOFPS, not even close. As far as I can see, it's only a FPS Survival with zombies that aren't really zombies.

It's no different to Gmod where a gamemode makes you having to survive and you have choices to do, and has zombies in it.

I'm sure it existed, because it sure as hell have a ton of gamemodes and I'm pretty sure 40~50% of the facepunch community comes here too.

It's not really sandbox, it's a open world zombie survival.

It gives off vibes of Brainbread where you shoot zombies and find weapons and items, without the rpg aspect.

It is an MMOFPS. Thats what it is classified as. It is very different from Gmod.

So, I will ask again, what other game is like DayZ.

Agreed on this, I'm quite sick of it actually, me and a group of friends spent so long finding eachother, getting weapons and now we and all the server died by some /kill command -.-

Gotta be #1 Priority.

Grats but if you'd read up and pay attention to what's been said when this is addressed you'd already know the problem so let me sum it up for you.

"This is an mod, in alpha, not a game in and of itself. What can be done about this is extremely limited until the game goes into stand-alone phase. So until then make note of everything that needs to be fixed, and suck it up. Because it's not going to change until then.

Hackers are DayZ biggest problem IMO, tons of players are stopping due to them. good luck getting them back if WarZ is ANY good.

Good point, like rocket said he welcomes the competition, we can only benefit from it as gamers. Would be a shame to see Day Z crash and burn for one reason or another before it makes any money at all though.

speaking of money, how the hell is Day Z supposed to make any money? Time for another forum search...

MMOFPS = Massively multiplayer online first person shooter.

What part of a DayZ instance is massively multiplayer?

You don't have 2000+ player limits, and it's a instanced.

It's connected to a hive server, but then that's simply labeled as a "Online" as it connects to a main server.

It's no different to Steam servers for your steam games, it connects to it, does that mean all your games on Steam is a MMO?

Granted, World of Tanks seemingly took a guiness world record for the most players online in a single server, but it's more like a lobby than a real game world so I guess the term doesn't need to apply to gameplay.

We really need to be more specific on what makes a game a MMO.

But more or less you definitely need more than 256 players on a server to consider it to be close to a MMO.

Cause BF3 Battlelog is browser based, has players connecting to a single EA web server, and you can view all the other servers just like how DayZ does it, and every server can be rented and has up to 64 player battles.

Personally, if it's under 100 player limit per instance, I see it as a online game.

If it's over 100 in a instance, It's a MMO or something close to one.

EDIT: Oh you mean "Rocket" classified his game as a MMO. Which means he probably doesn't know what makes a MMO a MMO... LOL!

All of our vehicles (8 total) were teleported away from us including a helicopter that we were refueling. All that work gone. Why even bother playing? All this effort and even if we spent the 4 hours going thru logs (why is there no tool for this?) More support for the hackers than the players. Ban a hacker and get blacklisted. Blaming Battle Eye is ridiculous and passing the buck. The malicious scripts that are run in this mod need to be blocked unless they are legitimate scripts run at a system or kernal level of the game. I have never seen such hacking ever. Rocket seem to be not even bothered when he got Thunderdome-ed.

Been Thunderdome-ed 2X. Been killed in server-wide nuke 3 X. I can go on with times I have been killed by blatant hacking. Hours of gameplay getting to a certain place and then dying to some clown, probably some pimply faced 15 year old running a script. Not picking up a gun and fairly shooting me. Running a txt file.

As for the people that seem to be Devs or hired by the Devs to troll the good guys getting turned into Roadkill by the hackers. There are 45:1 Hackers to abusive admins.

I have a video of some hackers that were AFK in God Mode that I burned off some clips on. I even RAN them over with a car, or just passed thru them. It seemed that they were dead, But they were probably preparing more scripts. How did I know they are not dead, they took the ATV that is next to them in the video. When I re-entered the game 10 minutes later that ATV was gone..

Great Game, but you cannot convince me that this will not happen with the finished product when the DAYZ devs are snubbing the players and the PAYING server admins. Even having people troll the folks who are complaining, but these complainers want to see this project succeed. No paying server admins, Not enough servers for the pubs and this project dies on the vine.

Perhaps we should get the attention of the community and the Devs by and organized protest by picking a day and having all concerned admins shut down their servers for a 24 hour period. Lets see if they shut down my account for this one.

The players are concerned hows about the Devs?

So you didn't notice the developer's stance on hacks and such when they talk like how politicians talk?

"Uhh yeah hacking is baaad, oh-kayuh.... Don't hack... Oh-kay...? Hacking is baaad..."

Seriously, when a admin plays around on his own private hive, he gets banned!

When a hacker runs rampage on all the 'official public hives' they get away scot free!

When a admin player wants to spawn helicopters, on a hive that's tiny and has very little people, then it does not warrant a ban. Especially when no one cares on that particular server. But yeah since these servers are hosted and rented, Enforcing rules on rented servers gets stupid. I mean, you paid for a server, so at the very least you get to make the rules on it. RIP murderface.

Control mongering on servers is almost as worse as Roblox and their freaking retarded administration that bans and deletes you every minute you post something that they don't like or don't understand.

Say minecraft = ban.

Say other games = ban.

And the funny part is that Roblox makes prepaid cards like Nexon and the other publishers, and APPARENTLY they get sold out at best buy for some odd reason...

I've started using the tools provided by some of our forum members to investigate people, and add them to the ban list if I find anything suspicious. Don't really care, I have enough evidence on each one and save it every time.

At first I thought the "X was killed by Y" thing would ruin it but hacking it out of control. A few nights ago I couldn't even get ahold of a gun because of how quickly I was getting killed over and over by hackers.

Go to another Server

And the cycle repeats. Hackers are ruining this game. Its sad really.
