Have a less than stellar internet connection and still play DayZ while chatting?

I finally convinced a friend of mine to come play this game with me. However, he is running a 6MB D/L DSL connection (not sure of U/L) and once he starts a game, he drops from chat. We have tried the steam chat (<Horrible) and Skype. Both do the same thing, He starts to break up really bad and sometimes will just disconnect all together. I'm assuming it's on his end since I don't have any problems with anyone else.

Does anyone know a workaround for this or a different chat service that is not as strenuous on bandwidth?

Try Teamspeak, most of the communication load is carried out by the server...

Is that a free service?

You have to pay for a server but there are servers you can join but may have other people in them.
