Is every gun the dinner bell now?

I was sneaking into a small town up north in daylight when a zed came too close and agroed me.

I ran into a barn bleeding, dispatched him with my winchester shotgun and bandaged up.

Then every zed in town converged on the barn from all directions.

I ended up unloading three full clips (45 rounds) hitting at least 98% of my shots. They all went down in one shot but they kept coming wave after wave until I was out of ammo.

The barn floor was literally littered with bodies.

I can accept that the shotgun might draw zeds from all directions even within the radius of the whole town.

But before I fired my first shot there couldn't have been 45 zeds in the whole town. They had to be re-spawning.

I checked the area with binoculares from the hillside before I came into town.

There were no zeds at all before I moved into town so I was the first survior in the area.

They started spawning as I crept into town and from my previous experience there shouldn't have been more than 20 or 30 in the area.

So either the Winchester 1866 now agros zombies for a killometer in all directions, or they were respawning as I was killing them.

It pretty much makes it impossible to use the shotgun since you'll eventually run out of ammo and be overrun anytime you use it.

Anyone else seen this? Is this just normal for the 1866? It was my first time using one.

Next time I'll just use my Makarov.

The Winchester uses plastic shells that have slugs in them. The shotgun term is outdated because you used to load the gun with "Shot". Today it refers to any weapon loaded with a "shell". Slugs are loaded into shells and therefore it is a shotgun.

UNFORTUNATELY, whoever made DayZ is a bit confused about this. The 1866 Winchester was a cartridge loaded weapon. Not shells. There is a lever action shotgun that game later but looks different than the one in game. I believe it is the 1877. I forget.

From the Wiki: Although in reality the Winchester 1866 is a lever action .44 Rifle, in DayZ it is a shotgun. It allows slugs in tubular magazines of 15.

I don't think he's confused, he was in the army after all. I think it's more to do with the gun models in game and what is available for use.

Yeah, they seem bugged but if you do your absolute best to never shoot you'll never have to worry about this. AND you wont have to worry about players.

I know plenty of people in the army that don't know crap about history of guns. It is important to know battle history and all that but not weapon history. It is more of a hobby of many soldiers. He could simple change the Winchester to use .45 ACP rounds since they commonly used .45 Long Colt. Slightly more realistic.

Zombie spawn is endless, you get swarmed if you are not careful. I like it, its more about outsmarting them (which is not hard) rather than brute force, which they should have and numbers on their side.

I think zombies now hear through walls again. Rocket confirmed that prior to 1.7.2.4 zombie's hearing to shots, was glitched. They didn't hear them. Now its fixed, and they hear you how they are SUPPOSE to hear and react. But I still think they hear through the walls again, now.

Spawning should be exactly that. When you are indoors, the waves should just keep on coming. If you are in the open, no new zombies should spawn and agro on top of you, so you can fight them off.

but it is at the point where it is near endless. you can barely get out of places half the time, you need to be able to shoot a few bullets without being near immediately mobbed, or not in such consistently overwhelming numbers.

Maybe they should change zombies AI so that when you fire a gun, they can hear it from a distance, but instead of aggro-ing, they investigate the general area of the sound. If you're smart you can kill a few zombies while dodging any investigating zombies.
