GexAlmighty 54 Posted July 29, 2012 You have to start with a torch, otherwise you cant start fresh on a night time server. it would litteraly be impossibru. Not having a single bandage isnt a great idea, its bad enough that you have to go and find cover to heal yourself, which is easier said than done without a barn or city around. and in the time it takes fresh from spawn you will bleed out to about 9000 health unless you get lucky trying to lose just one infected after he puts a mild scratch on your hand. I'm all up for spawning with no bandages, but only if it takes more hits before you start bleeding rather than having a hard look make my neck start gushing. pain killers arent needed at all really, id happily say to get rid of them. i also wouldnt mind losing the defult backpack, but only if the coyote backpack becomes a really common spawn. (it doesn't really hold fuck all, lets be honest.)
simonjames (DayZ) 10 Posted July 29, 2012 i`m up for any shit that makes survival harder, so i like this.If u want it harder then like someone suggested drop your items and then limit yourself to only using pistols or something ......imo its a bad idea that will drive away a lot of the casual players ,the backpack atm is fine and i see no need to empty it completely as you may be *pro* and can get equipped within 20mins but most of us regular players dont have 50hours plus gametime under our belts
subvision 14 Posted July 29, 2012 Sorry, but I have to write this. If you guys are uncomfortable with the starting gear, I would reccomend dropping everything and then move onwards.Should beginners really be scared away with a game just for some freaks? I think, the starting equipment is good as it is now, so let's leave it as it is. For me, it's even bitter not to start with any weapon. At least a hatchet would be handy. xloppielx 2 Posted July 29, 2012 This idea is stupid. Once you get to know how everything works, sure you might be able to manage but if you want people to actually start playing this game and grow its fan base more, spawning with nothing will stop that all together.

starwarsfan@gmx.de 450 Posted July 29, 2012 You masocistic mainiac.This.And how is starting with absolutly nothing on you supposed to be more 'realistic'? How'd you get to where you are with nothing on you? Doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever.
Howler 12 Posted July 29, 2012 ^ Listen to Samuel.I mean, if you'd read it, you'd see that there was a developing consensus for just one random item to spawn with. You think this idea would slow down the growth of the fan base? You kidding me? New players already start with next-to-nothing. It's a very unfriendly user interface for first time players anyway. And guess what. DayZ is still growing rapidly. Those who are saying that people like me who think this way should just drop their stuff on spawn? Fuck that. I'd rather everyone be on a level playing field.Bunch of wimps. Yeesh.

Since people playing already know were most things are.
Howler 12 Posted July 29, 2012 Ok so if you want everyone on a level playing field then when you start out, you get a weapon, food, water, and a map pinpointing were everything is. Since people playing already know were most things are.I thought you were advocating new player experiences? New players certainly wouldn't know where everything was unless they'd played Arma II before?Good cyclic argument tharr. And again. I'm in favour of people either spawning with nothing or people beginning with one random, not-so-valuable item.In a mod where realism is one of the key elements, everyone starting with the same stuff doesn't seem likely. That's all I'm trying to say.

That's all I'm trying to say.Healing broken bones in ten minutes with morphine isn't realistic, too. And also other aspects of the game are not realistic. There should be the perfect balance act between realism and playability. And starting with a bandage, painkillers and a flashlight, ok, and a backpack is the balance act not to scare new players away. The most will start the mod and think:"Huh, what? no weapon?" and play anyway. But starting with almost nothing would be too harsh for beginners. That's what I have to say. You are right in saying there is an attempt at striking a balance between realism and playability.Let's consider for a second what the items that we do start with help us. This is followed by my arguments as to why they are also not as useful as they could be.1. The coyote patrol backpackPros:- Space to keep items.- Cons: - Alienates any use for the czech vest pouch.- The international sign of someone who has recently begun their character - sparking the bandity thought process of "he won't mind if I send him back to the coast - he just began!"2. The flashlightPros:- Used at night-time to help visibility.Cons:- Most new players would probably switch to a daytime server.- Flashlights are a dead giveaway to player location. Emphasis on the dead.3. The bandage and painkillersPros:- Good for use after bleeding or when in shock.Cons:- Only good for one use. If there are more infected around when using this, they might just make you bleed an additional time - I mean, you might not even have a weapon.- Something to kill new players for. starwarsfan@gmx.de 450 Posted July 29, 2012 I can't be bothered to read ervery single post on every thread I want to post in. Maybe you've got that much time on your hands, I certainly do not.Besides, this thread is about starting with nothing - like the Thread title would suggest. Either let this thread die and open up a new one or think of a better title so it doesn't become invalid after the third post.

Seems legit.Anyways. Hopefully this'll stop the "OMG SO DUMB BRO, I NEED BANDAGES" type comments.
